Humidity Question

I recently purchased the Milano Glass Top 100 Count humidor from CI. Upon inspection I was very impressed with the constuction and the seal. I printed out some directions on how to season it that I found here on the Puff forums and I did the salt test on the analog hydrometer for 24 hours. Once it was seasoned it was holding a 68% steady for about 3 days so I added about 10 Sticks. It continued to hold a steady 68% - 70% for about another week. Then I recieved a shippment of cigars (45 of them). A couple of days after putting the 45 sticks in, the humidity has gone as high as 78%.It is now bouncing between 75% and 78%. I am using the stock old school humidifier for now until I can get a better system. Any clues on why the humidity would go up so much? The enviornment that the humidor is in has not changed.

Re: Humidity Question

The online stores I've ordered from ship their cigars in an overhumidified state, so that they don't dry out in transit. When you put them in the humi, they will release this moisture until everything evens out.

A good solution is heartfelt beads, they will soak up extra humidity if it is present.

Re: Humidity Question

This is my first desk top humidor but I was thinking the same thing. More cigars should lower the humidity. I just don't want to ruin my investment.

Adding extra cigars will add humidity because they are likely overhumidified for transit.

Re: Humidity Question

I had this same type of thing happen with my first humidor, a Milano 100, not a glass top. In mine the hygrometer was close to the humidifier. When I added a bunch of cigars there was only a small amount of air space and the reading spiked. Eventually it leveled out. I now have an 1oz of heartfelt beads in mine along with the humidifier. I agree with the above post. Heartfelt beads = peace of mind.

Assuming you're referring to the foam humidifier that comes with most humis... wouldn't the humidifier and the beads 'fight' each other? My humidifiers keep the RH @ 73%+ and the beads are either 65% or 70%. I could be wrong but wouldn't the beads just work to absorb the moisture given off by the humidifier?

To Walker's original question, it's already been mentioned but it's likely that the cigars were overhumidified for transit and the humidity will rise in the humi as well. So your hygro in the top will read even higher until the environment stabilizes.

If you are running at 73%, I would want the beads to absorb some of that. That is too high for my taste. But once he gets the beads, as long as he gets enough, you would not need the puck anymore. If you did leave it in, all you are really doing is charging the beads. Anyway, my .

Yep, that is what I was saying. The foam humidifiers, IMO, hold the humidity too high, at least here in Atlanta. Blueeyedbum said he had both beads and a humidifer in his humi.

Plus, if you had a foam humidifier and 65% beads and kept the foam moist the beads would just stay maxed out trying to suck up all the humidity, the foam would win the battle, and your RH in your humi would be based on only the foam humidifier and the beads just become water storage.

Not meaning to hijack but I think this applies to the original question as well.

Re: Humidity Question

Well the humidity reached 80% so I started to freak out a little bit. I took out the humidifier. It's been a week and the humidity is just now getting down to 68-70%. I tried putting the humidifier back in and it went back up to 75% with in a few hours. The humidifier is the foam one that came with the humidor. I'm thinking on my next order I am going to invest in a better humidifier. I'm guessing all the new sticks I put in must have been really over humidified.

I check it everyday. It was only 80% for a very short time. Maybe a few hours at most. Thanks for the heads up though.

Re: Humidity Question

You will not have problems with tobacco beetles due to high humidity. Beetles can hatch at any humidity if the temps stay above 72degrees for an extended period of time. High humidity can promote mold growth.

The answer is 1-2oz of Heartfelt beads.
