I sue my PALIO most of the time...
I think it gives a better cut than my Xikat MTX or cutter...
I suggest using two fingernails to remove a small piece of cap.

Pete Johnson of Tatuaje does this....
Just the smallest tear or cut.

And then their is your teeth

Re: Are Cutters Overrated? Anything simpler?

The OP has a point..I think some of these cutters are over rated.

Those with the Xikar Multi tool ..how in the world are you cutting caps, without damaging them? The day I got my brand new Multi tool, I ruined the cap on a cigar. The tool was dull from the factory, and it always seems to want to squeeze the cap instead of cutting it, regardless if I'm trying to "nip" the cap or not.

The only cutters I think is not over rated is the Palio and "V" cutters.

That's in the eye of the beholder. I still use my trusty inexpensive guillotine and it does exactly for me what a $50 cutter would do. Prepare my cigar for smoking.

I think a good cutter is worth its price, I recommend Palio.. always sharp, easy to handle.
You might want to rethink you cutter if it gets dull. I spent a little more for my cutter, but it is seven years old and has never dulled. Let's do some math.

one cheap cutter a year at $10 x 5 years = $50 or 1 good cutter $45 = 7 years so far. Cheaper to buy right the first time.

The Zino Cutter is about $45. Never dulls, and is guaranteed for life.

Re: Are Cutters Overrated? Anything simpler?

I have a different type of guillotine cutter which doesn't seem to be discussed much here. It has two normal blades, but the hole in the middle is covered with plastic on one side. You can only feed the cigar in less than quarter inch. It takes the smallest bit of cap off, and if you want a bigger cut, you can cut again. I had a habit of taking too much cap off, and unraveling the cigar, but not anymore.

I try other cutters when I smoke at the B&M, and I like the V-cut. The punch is okay, but it has plugged up the draw sometimes. The only reason I would spend more than $5 on a cutter is if it looks fancy. Good to have a shiny accessory to show off sometimes.

Your teeth are pretty hard to beat as far as simplicity and portability. simply bite down slightly on the cap, then pull forward it will pop right off. It takes some practice so try it alone with cheaper cigars at first. To avoid looking like a redneck at the golf course chew the cap a little bit and discreetly discard with your fingers.

Re: Are Cutters Overrated? Anything simpler?

I have not expanded too much into the world of cigar cutting. However, I do like my Xikar cutter. I think that the price I paid, along with the lifetime warranty is definately worth it. Once in awhile if I can find much punch cutter, I'll use that. It's a lot better for the cigars I smoke since I like them a little bit dryer than most. I still have yet to try a v-cut. When I get some more funds readily available, I'll try it on a fresh box of 5 Vegas Miami!

Re: Are Cutters Overrated? Anything simpler?

I definatly believe in quality. I own a Xikar MTX, but I use a pocket knife 99% of the time, so there days I am actually using a $3-400 cutter.

It's not advisable to pop the cap off. The cap provides stability for the wrapper. Once completely removed, the cigar will tend to unravel at the head. This is why it is suggested that a cigar is cut at the shoulder, rather than further down. So my suggestion is Take Smaller Bites!

Re: Are Cutters Overrated? Anything simpler?

My father in law showed me last time I visited, that he just takes a sharp steak knife and cuts a little cross in the end. I was skeptical at first, but the draw was really good, no unwinding of the cap,and didnt crush the cigar.

I thought I'd like a punch, but soon found out that with punches unless its sharp you can really screw it up, and it leaves pieces of the cap in the punch, yadda yadda yadda, so I guess if your GONNA go the punch line, make sure its a really good one. I saw one with a resharpening casing one time. Cant remember the name though

Re: Are Cutters Overrated? Anything simpler?

I'm in with other comments here. It sounds like you would prefer a punch. There is more than one size, but each punch gives the same size hole for every cigar (except torpedos). The guillotine cutters have to be large enough for a wide variety of cigars to fit into, hence the visual overkill you mention.
