Easy seasoning fix, just fill a shot glass with distilled water and sit it inside the humidor for 3 days, all done. Most of the water, if not all should be gone. The gel-packs are ok but not necessary, your choice. For maintaining the humidity at a precise level the gel-packs are a great addition.

As for the hygro, I would definitely go digital. Look for one that can be adjusted and then calibrate it. Several reliable methods of doing this but I won't go into that here as it can be long-winded, just search the site or Google "Salt Test", my personal fav method.

An humidor you get needs to be at least 1/2 full +. It will stay regulated much easier....

Thanks! I figured it probably wasn't good to be really empty. I have heard though that once you get a humidor friends tend to buy you cigars for many occasions so between gifts and my own purchases I think It'll fill up quickly! Still need lighter brand suggestions..

Re: Lighter and Humidor Question

You can always try dealextreme.com. They have some really good/cheap lighters. I've been using my torch and card-style lighters from there for a while now, and they still work great. Plus they're only a few bucks and it's free shipping, so you're not investing a lot. I second the Colibri negatives. My $2 dealextreme lighter has lasted far longer than my old Colibri

Dupont Xtend is probably one of the best lighters available. They are not cheap though.

As for humidors, I would just go ahead and get This One. It will save you from having to do it later.

Can I get an ?

To give you a little background I'm fairly new to the cigar world I have been enjoying an occasional cigar for almost a year now. That being said I'm in the market for my first humidor and quality butane lighter. I'm pretty settled on my humidor I'm currently looking at a Craftsmens Bench Magellan (comments welcome).. I've heard to look for a humidor that is spanish cedar, at least just over a quarter inch thick, and it should seal on a pocket of air; the Magellan seems to meet all of these requirements. The lighter seems to be more of a hassle to settle on. I like Colibri's designs but I know that they are under new ownership and can't seem to get a straight answer as to whether or not the new company is giving their old lighters a lifetime warranty or not. I have also heard Xikar makes a quality lighter but their designs don't seem to be as appealing and the price being so much lower then Colibri's kind of scares me off as crazy as that may sound. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated..
For a lighter consider a Blazer PB 207. Not pretty but holds a ton of fuel and mine has been very reliable.

There is nothing wrong with buying inexpensive cigars, but make sure they are ones you like. I wouldn't buy cigars just to take up space in the humidor.

Re: Lighter and Humidor Question

I agree with Dale on the Ronson Jetlites. They are workhorses! Probably not, however, what you'd want as a sentimental reminder of the love of a good woman. Stay away from Colibri. The only reason I can come up with for their cost has been the warranty. You're basically paying for everyone elses returns and they do a LOT of warranties! They just stop running.

I have many friends with Xikars and all report good results. Im using a Nibo Space 6 triple flame and love it. Any triple flame will require constant adjustment, since it's throwing out soooo much fuel, but for the quickness and ease of toasting and lighting, it's well worth it. I got mine off the Devil for $16.

Also, DBCigar is on the money. Keep your box at least half full and your humidification issues will be kept to a minimum. Get BEADS! For the money, I really like the Savoy 150ct humidor. They are very well made and elegant looking. My B&M sells them in several finishes for $135

BE CAREFUL! when seasoning a humi. Always check its humidity FIRST. Also, use discretion when adding water. Depending on thickness, grade and dryness of the cedar, if you add too much too fast it will move on you. Once it's moved, your seal is shot forever. Ex: when I got my latest box, it was from a B&M with a whole-store humi system. When I unboxed and checked it, it was sitting right at 70%. Check it first!

Re: Lighter and Humidor Question

Going add to everyones very good advise:

- Whichever lighter you decide on get very good fuel for it. The more refined the fuel the better. For me I go with Vector. I have two Colibri lighters that work much, much better with Vector fuel (I would also avoid Colibri lighters)

- I know you are looking for lighters to carry with you but for the home may I suggest a Vector table torch. I love mine and so do all my guests whether they are smoking cigars or cigarettes.

- Cheap cigars are ok to place in the humi but you want to try to avoid "flavored" cigars (Helix, Acid's etc.) in there if you can.
