Jar Humidor

I am looking to buy one of the jar humidors that they have on CI for a bit of extra cheap room. What is the best way to keep that humidified properly? I don't really know what it comes with... Thanks for the help.

Re: Jar Humidor

Throw in some beads and you will never have to do anything... ever. I have one that seals up tight. I use it for long-term, slow aging. I almost never open it up and it just sits at 72% without me even recharging the beads. I have some La Gloria Maduros from 2006 in one. I have another filled with ISOMs that are now about 10 years old.

Humijars are awesome for cigars. Do not use the normal humidifiers. They will stay too moist and start to mold. Also, do not use humidity gels (like Drymistat) because they will stay too wet.

If the seal is good, and you do not open the jar, then you do not even have to keep a humidifier in the jar once the cigars are moist enough. I once had mine without any humidification for 4 months and the relative humidity never dropped. Again... this only works if the seal is very good.

Re: Jar Humidor

This is mine:

At first I used the black plastic disk that came with a humi. I had laying around. Its got a sponge in it and I used a PG solution and distilled water. It is attached to the lid with velcro. Then I switched to a bead tube.

I also cut a piece of cedar for the bottom.

Here it is filled.

Re: Jar Humidor

I just use them for some 'extra' cigars I have lying around that won't fit in my other humi's

Re: Jar Humidor

A Ball canning jar from the grocery store is the same thing at much cheaper price. My opinion, they are only good for desktop ready service use, as they do not allow the air exchange that cigars need to properly age. Years ago, I kept some properly humidified cigars in a jar for about a year, and they came out smelling like wet diapers.

Re: Jar Humidor

you can get the same acrylic jar from wal-mart and not have to pay shipping. I bought the one from CI, then replaced the humidifier on the lid with a hygrometer and used a drymistat. Have bought 2 jars from wallys and set them up similar. The jar fits in the thermos holder a Peterbilt perfectly.
