Humidor humidity to high
I got my first humidor last week and went through the proper ways of setting it up. All though I didnt use a 50/50 mix I just used distilled water to fill my humidifer. I calibrated the hydrometer too. The humidity was around 73% when I put my cigars in. I went out of town for the weekend and when I got home it was reading 78%. ihave taken the humidifier out for a few hours hopeing that would lower the humidity some but its still reading around 75%. Is there anyway I can get this to go down to 70%. All most everything I've found is only info on raiseing humidity.

Re: Humidor humidity to high
What are you using as a humidifier? I'm sure the 50/50 mix would help, it's what is responsible for regulating the humidity at proper levels. Many of us use beads or crystal gel, if you don't go this route, be prepared to fight your humidity a little. But what I would suggest is to take out your humidifier until it reaches proper levels, and perhaps leave out your humidifier in the open for awhile, you might have overfilled it.

Re: Humidor humidity to high
Sounds like it's high because you just used water instead of the 50/50. If the humidor has a decent seal on it, you will have to leave the lid open for a little bit to get the humidity to go down. I would suggest leaving it open for about 15 minutes at a time and then check it. That way you don't dry it out completely. This is why the beads work so well. They will reabsorb moisture once it gets above whatever percentage your beads are. The foam humidifiers won't do that.

Re: Humidor humidity to high
There is a sticky thread at the top of this section that tells you all about the beads. Basically they are silica that you wet down and they give off and more importantly reabsorb moisture to stabilize your humidity. I would highly recommend getting some.

Re: Humidor humidity to high
Where did you buy your sticks? I hear alot of online dealers ship their sticks over humified. If this is the case it may be the reason you humidity has risen.

Re: Humidor humidity to high
OK...I have never shared this info with anyone and never will again.....Well, I may have been really drunk a time or 2 and posted it but I don't really remember so technically this is the first time that I can recollect posting it. Anyway.......
Plain clay cat litter from the Dollar Store, it's about a buck for like 5 Lbs. It has no smell, will not harm you cigars in any way, and works wonders at absorbing excess humidity. Put about 1 pound in a large bowl or open container and set it in your humidor for about a week.... 1/2 Lb for a smaller humidor. Take it out when the humidity level is right. With the humidity and temp spikes here in GA, this has worked very well for me for a number of years now. Your humidity WILL go down, guaranteed!
