Re: Hearfelt beads and cancer

Good thing I smoke the cigars and not the beads.

Seriously though, I don't think that it is anything you have to worry about.

Yup maybe.

After reading a bit more into it, I found Silicia dust only seem to be associated with cancer.. but since you let your cigars age with the Silicia, should you worry ?

From Wikipedia :

Silica gel is non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-reactive and stable with ordinary usage. It will react with hydrogen fluoride, fluorine, oxygen difluoride, chlorine trifluoride, strong acids, strong bases, and oxidizers[5]. Silica gel is irritating to the respiratory tract, may cause irritation of the digestive tract, and dust from the beads may cause irritation to the skin and eyes, so precautions should be taken [6]. Some of the beads may be doped with a moisture indicator, such as cobalt(II) chloride, which is toxic and may be carcinogenic. Cobalt (II) chloride is deep blue when dry (anhydrous) and pink when moist (hydrated).

Crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis but synthetic amorphous silica gel is non-friable, and so does not cause silicosis.

Re: Hearfelt beads and cancer

I rarely if ever move my beads and have never seen them "dust off' off as such I feel safe.

Plus there is such a small amount of beads and most of us wet them down there is little worry of dust.

I will smoke and not worry about it.

Also I hear bad things about second hand smoke....

Re: Hearfelt beads and cancer

It does say it's non-flammable, I imagine it takes a bit more than a cigar ember to smoke? I think the danger they are talking about is inhaling large quantities of the dust (think "silicone sawmill")

Re: Hearfelt beads and cancer

I thought the beads were a type of salt. Hence their ability to absorb and release moisture.

This is all anyone needs to worry about right here.

Crystalline silca dust causes silicosis. There are no crystals in Heartfelt beads, or any other bead used for moisture control. They are perfectly safe.

However, the diatomaceous earth used to replenish your pool filter is mostly crystalized silica. That stuff is something you don't want anywhere near your lungs.

Re: Hearfelt beads and cancer

Sounds like another reason to just buy boxes and store your cigars in boxes.. ya know to minimize the chances the cigars will encounter that dreaded silica dust... yeah thats my justification

the beads are white when dry adn clear when wet. I'm not a scientist and dont know but the owner of heartfelt beads used to be a member so why doesnt someone try to raise him and ask him. one more thing to worry about

Re: Hearfelt beads and cancer

Silica is found in sand, and quartz too! Imagine getting tan, and all the sand blowing to your face, and you remember this thread, and start running to your car I used to do sanblasting, so I didn't knew sandblasting produces big amount of it! So now Im really scarer hmm, not funny!!! Cause I have few symptoms once in a while. I should see my doctor!
