Moving countries - How do I transport my humidor?

I'm getting ready to move back to America and have a nice 50 cigar humidor with glass top (at CI it's called the Whitetail glasstop humidor, I can't link URLs just yet) mostly full of cigars. I still have the box it came in with the foam even. My humidor is going to be boxed up and put on a boat for several weeks. I was hoping to just leave my cigars in the humi to be sent, but I'm worried about them rattling around too much and getting messed up in the move. Is there any "filler" I can put in there to lessen the empty space so my sticks don't bounce around or is there a better way to ship it back?

Any suggestions anyone can give would be great.

thanks,
Jack

You could put your cigars in ziploc baggies and then place them in the humi. If there is extra space in the humi then maybe you could place some packing peanuts or airbags to prevent movement within .

Can you ziploc the smokes and take them with you as carry on and send the humi seperately? That's what I'd try to do...

Re: Moving countries - How do I transport my humidor?

I think there's a limit to how much tobacco you can carry or check on flights. That's why I was hoping I could just keep them in the humi for shipping. Also, I won't have any stable environment if I carry them for almost a month and I'd prefer not to have to wait 2 months for them to rehydrate if something does happen.

I think I may have to bag them and make sure there's no room for them to bounce around, do you think the humidity in the bag will be good enough to not ruin them for too long? I will most likely be able to fit most of my stash into it and the rest I will take on the plan, either in an old cigar box and my travel humidor which holds 5. I will have to find the airline rules to make sure I won't break too many international laws when I fly in.

Thanks, keep the suggestions coming if there's more.

What about mailing them to yourself or someone who can hold them for you?

Wrap them in zipper bags and use air pillows and/or bubble wrap to take up the remaining space. Be sure to double box the humi.

I am going to have to drive my humi and cooler up to NY soon when I move, I kept the original box the humi came in with styrafoam.

I'd still be for filling up any space in those. Even bouncing around in a car for 5hrs can be harmful. Considering what I know of your collection, I'd want to hedge my bets.

LOL. Yeah, I've saved all the bubble wrap and airbags that I've gotten, and will probably try and find a bunch of single-sized ziplocks.

Edit - And my collection is not that nice. I've got some $$ sticks but only a handful.

Good question. I think I'd take as many precautions as possible. For example, I'd avoid going through customs at the same time eg, standing in the same line together. I'd take the best lot with me and give her the stuff you wouldnt get suicidal about if confiscated. Better yet, she kept her maiden name on her passport. Evenso, I'd give Customs a quick/non-descript phone call.

Customs Agent: "Has anyone given you anything and asked you to carry it for them?"

Wife: "Yeah, my husband asked me to carry 50 of his cigars so we could get past you!"

Seriously though, I've travelled with a significant other, where both carried two cartons of cigarettes. Never had a hassle.

Yes. The limit is per person.
