Re: That new cedar smell...
Spanish cedar shouldn't have a strong smell and I'd recommend not messing with it; however, if you really want to get it back, sanding the interior very lightly with extra-fine sandpaper will remove the oxidized surface renew the smell.

The whole reason for using cedar really isn't about imparting it's characteristic aroma to the tobacco. This is simply a by-product. The reason for using cedar is for it's natural ability to absorb and predictably release moisture. Also, wood's natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties are of benefit. Some do enjoy the coincidental effect of the aroma, but it's a strictly tertiary phenomenon. There is the possiblity, depending on age, that your surface could be oxidized, but this would be pretty old wood. More likely, the cedar has simply exhausted all it's essential oils; at least to the point where they are detectable to your nose. Short of sanding, you could just get some thin sheets and lay them over/under your smokes.

Re: That new cedar smell...
Don't know the size of your humi but what works for me in buying more boxes, coffined cigars and or cedar wrapped singles.
Personally I love the faint smell of cedar under tobacco smell but I perfer my cedar smell as an undertone. If you like the cedar smell I would suggest you get a cedar plank and just sniff that and leave the humi alone. I wouldn't want the cedar smell to start to over power your cigars natural smells and tastes - unless you really love strong cedar tastes.

Re: That new cedar smell...
Thanks all for your repsonses. I do love the cedar undertone to a fine cigar. Last night a friend gave me an Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva Maduro that was mildly cedar from his newer humi. I loved it. My humidor is now 10 years old and I don't get any cedar aroma from it anymore.
The plank idea is good....may have to try it! |

Re: That new cedar smell...
I have to say that I do enjoy a little cedar flavor in my stronger cigars. In milder cigars I think it is over powering
