Seasoning My Humidor..

So I got my humidor in and am ready to start seasoning it. I bought 4 Boveda packs (3 84% and 1 72%). It said to use 4-5 84% packs for a humidor my size but I thought it was a little overkill thats why I decide to go with my particular mix. I still haven't bought a digital hygrometer and I don't really trust the one that came with it but I want to start seasoning it. Should I go ahead and stick the packs in now or wait to get a digital hygrometer. Also how do I use the Boveda packs, just open them up and place them on the humidor floor? I'll try to get some pics of the humidor up soon..

Re: Seasoning My Humidor..

Throw those mothers in! I also have a humi seasoning right now. I don't have as many Boveda packs as you (just take them out of the clear plastic wrap and throw them in - dont open the actual packet with liquid inside) but i also filled a shallow dish with distilled water and filled the humidifier that came with it up to help speed the process. Until you get a digital hygrometer do a salt test on the analog hygrometer to calibrate it and get some sense of where it stands (salt test should make it read 75%) It will work, you just have to make a note of how accurate it is. It will take a while to season it so start now and by the time you get a digital hygrometer you'll be on your way!

Just put the 84s in. Do not put the 72 in.

Thanks Lance

Re: Seasoning My Humidor..

Read this.

IMHO, you're going at it backwards. Start with an accurate hygro reading FIRST. Not that the packs will impart moisture fast enough to warp your wood, but I cant understand why anyone would want an 84% humidor.

I just finished re-seasoning a 25ct box for some CC's. I put a damp sponge in it for a few days. After that, I took the sponge out and put some 70% beads in for a few more. It's now sitting rock solid. In my case, it DID need to be seasoned, since it was 56% when I started. Just remember, if you take it up too high, you're going to need to pull it back down that much more. For me, I want a humi to be stable at 67-70% for two days prior to installing cigars.

Re: Seasoning My Humidor..

BovedaDirect

Do not put the 72 in because it will abosrob the moisture the 84s are putting out to season the Humi. Once your humi is seasond throw away the seasoning packs and put in the right amount of 72% packs. With the 72% packs you will level out around 69% or so. Add smokes and just change packs every 2-3 months depending on your humi seal and how ofter you open it up. Also with the 84% packs you dont need to use anything else no damp sponge no shot glass of dis water etc etc.

The only bad thing about the packs is that you will always have to keep buying them but to me its worth it. Its all I use.

And If I had a big humi or cooler I would us beads.

Thanks Lance

Re: Seasoning My Humidor..

I have already begun seasoning my humidor, for the time being I just calibrated and used the included hygrometer. Next Sunday it should be fully seasoned and I will get pics up. I don't know whether I want to continue with the Boveda packs or not yet but I heard the beads could cause cancer or impart harmful chemicals. Anyone have any info to lend about the beads?

Re: Seasoning My Humidor..

Beads cause cancer? perhaps if you eat them but using them as they are meant to be used should cause no harm at all. Unless I am mistaken and harmful chemicals can be transported along with the water molecules in the air, which I don't think is happening.

Re: Seasoning My Humidor..

I'm not sure, I haven't really seen solid evidence for either side. There is a pretty large thread on here about it though..
