Why a Vinotemp 28 bottle?

Why is this the size that everyone likes?

There are other sizes close to this that are also thermo electric and are actually in stock in local stores. The advantage being we could inspect it for damage and not pay $70 - $100 for shipping...

I want this size cause that's what guys are building drawers and shelves for..... but nobody stocks this size at Home Depot, Sears, Lowes, Sam's. Best Buy etc.

Just wondering....

I haven't looked at them in the stores etc... Is there a big price difference in that size? Could be thats just the size everybody reads about so they think thats what they need. Myself if I was buying one I would try to get the biggest one I could afford.

I think many buy for the same reason you do, just because it has developed a certain level of infrastructure (shelves, etc.). Any thermoelectric unit should do the trick. If you can afford and have the space for something larger, by all means go for it. The only thing I can think of is you may need to add fans to a larger unit.

Re: Why a Vinotemp 28 bottle?

I think the 28 vino temp is used by so many because at one time these were very easy to find and at a very reasonable price, now not so much, and like you mentioned now you can order premade shelves and drawers that make the vino-temp very cigar friendly. That being said, I have owned many desk tops, and have 168 qt cooler with spanish cedar shelves and its nice, BUT my 28 bottle vino temp with the custome drawers is by far my favorite. If I had to do it all over again I'd never purchase a desktop, it would be coolers, vino temps, or a nice cabinet.

Finding the right accesories, the ones that fit your needs, is part of the fun in our hobby, enjoy the journey.

As others have said, it became standard when they were still around. But the "infrastructure" problem is less so now. The people who make the shelves and drawers and stuff are doing them for the Haier units for those who couldn't find Vinotemp 28s. Just gotta ask, they won't bite

I am looking for nice shelves for a Edge Star 28 but have not found how to contact any of the makers. Can anyone help me on this one?

Re: Why a Vinotemp 28 bottle?

28 was the biggest you could get and still have the thermo-electric cooling unit. You always need more space, so why go smaller?

If you went bigger, you would get a compressor unit that pulls the moisture out of the air.

Like others have noted. They used to sell these at Target and they would always go on sale. I know several people who bought them for under $100. Now the Haier units are more common and affordable.
