ST Dupont X-Tend problem...leaking butane???
Today was the first time I used this lighter.
The lighter actually came with some fuel in it as I was able to light it right out of the box. Before I went to the shop today I used some of my vector butane and filled the lighter some more, so I was sure it was full. At the shop I used it to light a cigar and it worked great. The next cigar I used it on is when I noticed the problem. After the cigar was lit and the lighter was shut down I heard a "hissing" coming from the lighter. I also could smell some butane coming from the lighter. It was leaking butane. It was not a quiet "hissing" and was easily discernable from a foot away or so. I though this was obviously a problem and called the retailer I bought it from. They told me that I possibly overfilled it. That being said they were more than happy to send me a new one once I sent the old one back. At the shop I continued to use it and it continued to do the same thing, it would light, but after it was shut off it would still leak out butane. After using it for a little while longer the problem just sort of went away as the butane level went down. It lit probably 4-5 more cigars and didn't leak after those ones. Also...when the lighter is full, after each light if I hold my ear up to the lighter and I can hear a faint gurgling noise (possibly gas escaping). After a little while of lighting the lighter and letting the fuel go down to about the 3/4 point it stops leaking any butane and also stops making the faint gurgling noise. So I guess my question is this... Is it possible I overfilled it with butane? Has anyone else experienced these noises this with this lighter? is it normal? I don't wanna send it back if it is not broken...help

Re: ST Dupont X-Tend problem...leaking butane???
Sorry, I have never owned an X-tend or any other torch that leaked.. Sounds like there may be some type of gasket or something that is causing it to leak. I think I would send it back to be fixed or replaced.

Re: ST Dupont X-Tend problem...leaking butane???
i dont think that u can overfill the lighter... the butane will kick back out of the gasket when full... ive owned an xtend for over 2 years now and have never had a problem like that... the only other thing i can think of is that u have the flame set too high... purge the lighter, turn the flame down, refill it and wait a few minutes for the butane to hit room temp... if u still have the problem its defective... its too expensive to not have it working properly... send it back and get another one

I have several butane torch lighters, and I don't know how you can overfill them. I just push the fuel can (vector) down on the nipple and remove it when the sound stops, then do an air purge and am good to go. It doesn't sound like overfilling is the problem. In any event, send it back for repair.

Re: ST Dupont X-Tend problem...leaking butane???
Long time ago I bought a Gold dupont lighter for an arm and a leg that leaked butane. You can find the exact spot it leaking from by running a flame around the lighter and seeing where it ignites. I sent the lighter back to dupont and they remachined the bottom where the "cap" covers the spot that you refill (hope i didnt lose you with my technical jargon). No problems since then except for the price of dupont butane.

It should not leak. Dupont will repair it. Is it possible that you put so much in that it just over flowed?
