Type of glue and brass nails for humidor?
Okay, here's the deal. My humidor is a Romeo y Julieta anniversary type. It held about 125 RyJ. I picked it up cheap after seeing that the inside was very nicely done with spanish cedar. Seals great and holds rH right at 70. Problem is it didn't come with a top shelf.
Discussion first: When I've seen in other humidors is that the wooden ledges that hold the top shelf are cut into the spanish cedar sides and glued. Issue: I have a shelf that I ordered and it fits. I don't want to pull the cedar out as it would be messy and troublesome. Since I can't cut the slots very easily (too easy to screw up) I was wondering if I could use a standard wood glue and brass nails to attach ledges to hold the shelf up. I was thinking that the ledges would be about 5 inches long and about 3/8 by 1/4 inch. My biggest concern is will the glue cause off flavors? The wood glues I'm looking at are rated for glueing pieces for use in kitchens. Thing is most of them are open air (butcher block) and not enclosed. I don't think the brass nails will be an issue....does anyone else? I'm hoping someone on the forums has woodworking experience to point out problems or if it's fine what I have planned. ![]() |

Might be easier to fasten vertical pillars or uprights in the corners and along the sides to hold the shelf. Small stock like maybe 1/4" or 3/8" wouldn't really take up usable space. Probably more stable than gluing to the sides. I would think those would be prone to coming loose. You could even use them to support the ledges for the shelf. That would solve the problem of them loosening, but you would still have the ledge.

Yeah, dont use slats to support the shelf. Cedar is really soft, so in time the slats will likely cause you problems. Build two "half walls" on the sides to support the tray. Yes, it will cost you some space, but in the long run, save you some headaches. Good ole Elmers wood glue is fine. You will smell a very faint odor until it dries completely, but after that, nothing. Be sure to wipe the excess from around the edges.
You can use brass nails to hold in place while the glue dries, but I prefer blocks and clamps.

Use wood glue. It will hold much better and has less of a chemical smell than other glues and as said above, clamps are much better than nails.. they leave no evidence.

Thanks guys. I'll try the short posts in the corners since I have some thicker spanish cedar on hand.

Obviously, you want the wood to be as dry as possible, in order for the glue to create a good bond and dry as quickly as possible. Once the project is complete, season passively; DONT WIPE ANYTHING to season.

You can use hot glue.

You could also use CA glue. That's what I would use. It will give off an acidic vapor when it "goes off" but afterward is odorless.
