I must be a dummy

I feel almost stupid for asking this but here goes. All my life I have used cheap disposible lighters.
I have recently come into possession of two butane lighter to step up to the real world. Ones a vector, and the other is some brand(I cant remember) That was thrown in with a thompson deal.
Both of them have at the bottom the refill nib, and a screw. Neither came with directions. I drained all the pressure and refilled each one then with the butane. No problem. I assume the screw at the bottom is just a case screw.
What I am trying to figure out(I am a dummy) is how to adjust the flame. On both of them the refill nibs, have an arrow, with a plus and minus side, and what looks like a little cut out around the nib. Am I suppossed to put a pen or a small screwdriver in the cutout and twirl that outer circle around.
If the answer is yes, it doesnt budge on either of them. Is there a special piece thats suppossed to come with lighter to do it. ? One of them is the single flame vector torch match.
Any help would be appreciated.

Much regards Jerry

Re: I must be a dummy

Yes where the arrow and slot are is the flame adjustment.

With out seeing the bottom of the lightes its just a guess...but should be the right direction.

Good luck.

Re: I must be a dummy

I've got one that came from Thompson...silver., elongated rectangle, has the filler that you're describing plus an outer ring around the filler with 2 notches on opposing sides of the filler spout. That's the adjustment ring, you need a screwdriver that fits it exactly to get it to move, or, I've been using the pocket clip that I yanked off of a mechanical pencil, just happens to fit perfectly. The thing is, whatever tool you use must engage the slots correctly or it won't move. I've got a Vector also, but I don't know the style, much more rounded than the Thompson. The adjustment for it is the screw that is adjacent to the filler.

Hope that helps,

Rod

Re: I must be a dummy

If you can find a Ronson Butane lighter,,,get one. It's idiot proof in that you dont even have to adjust anything ( you can as the screw is there to adjust the flame ) just put it on the most advanced setting and refill it,,,,wait a few minutes and you're smoking. I have 12 Ronsons and have used my very first Ronson for a year already and all I do is refill this thing and go!

CheapHumidors (cheaphumidors.com) has a newbie section that has much good info for newbies including how to refill your lighter. Check them out.

Nah.. don't worry about it Jerry we've all asked the stupid questions. but in fact this wasn't a stupid question because the darn cheap lighters sometimes don't work the way you would expect. I agree with Gary, you should pick up a Ronson next time your at Walmart they work very well and are very reliable plus they are dirt cheap like $2.50.

Thanks.
I have tried everything to move the adjustment. Pens, screwdrivers, knives, paper clips, jewelers scredrivers, nails.
I wrote to vector, and got a nice reply, saying if I send it to them, they will look at it, and fix it if its broken. Nice offer, but I cant be bothered.
I think next time I go to my b and m, I will ask him to look at it, and if he says its broken, then I will send it vector.
Question: Is there any danger in leaving a butane lighter in the glove compartment of a truck?

Much regards Jerry

The only thing I can think might be an issue is during the summer the heat will cause the butane to expand possibly forcing a little to leak. Under the most perfect of conditions, meaning the correct fuel to air ratio along with the addition of a spark could cause the leaked gas and air to ignite. Keep in mind that is only possible in theory and the odds of it actually happening would be astronomical. So with that being said if it were me I would have no worries keeping a butane lighter in the glove compartment. but since you asked...my answer probably didn't alleviate any previous worries you may have had about it, so you could try this.. Click here

I have one that I use to transport my filled lighter when I go on flights. haven't had a problem yet. very sturdy well made product unlike the rest of Colibri products.

Re: I must be a dummy

Thanks, I think I will pick one up to be on the safe side. What I was hopeing to do, was to keep a small regular humidor in the truck, with the lighter inside of it, with a cutter. So anytime I was in my truck, and decided I want a smoke, I have everything I need in one small case.

Much regards Jerry

Re: I must be a dummy

The inexpensive ronsons you are talking about...are they regular lighters , like the kind for cigarrettes, or can you toast a cigar with them like the vector or the cheapie thomspons I have.

They are a single flame butane lighter. I have a few myself. For less than $3 you can't go wrong. Works great for lighting cigars.

Lol,,,I do only because when I bought my first one the damn thing was indestructible and worked every single time ( still does ) and thinking to myself,,for $2.84 I'd better get my hands on as many as I can find. I have put my Ronson thru the wash several times already,,,thru the dryer,,,dropped it at least a dozen times and this thing is like a Timex,,,takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. I get mine at Walmart and have to resist the temptation to buy more when I see them,,,,yep, I think 12 is enough but my OCD thinks I need another 12 just in case something happens to the first dozen.
