Coolidor question
OK guys I have taken the plunge and assembled my first cooler. I followed all the insrtuctions in the sticky, and man it was a BIG help.
However, I am having trouble with the humidity. I have a 28qt igloo. It is a little small but it fit my budget. I have 6 empty wooden cigar boxes in it to help regulate the humidity. I have 3/4 of a pound of 70% beeds in it and they have been in there since Saturday night. To the problem; the humidity in the top portion of the cooler is around 62-65%, which I am fine with. But at the bottom of the cooler it is around 52-54%. How can i fix this? Why the big difference in just a small space. It seems kinda odd. Do I need to let it season longer. Is there a way to speed up the process? Or is it just something simple I am missing? |

Re: Coolidor question
1st off, are you using seperate hygros or just moving 1 around? If 2, are they calibrated?
Also, could be that some of your cigar boxes are more dehydrated and simply haven't reached proper humidification yet, they may be affecting the surrounding rh. Just picked up an Oust fan from Heartfelt Industries today, It's small, battery powered and turns itself off and on every so often. I can't find the Heartfelt link right now (brain lock) but I know that it's been posted several times. I think that would go a long way to fixing your problem. |

Re: Coolidor question
I am using the same hygrometer, just moving it around. And I did the salt test for 36 hours so it should be good. I will have to check out the fan and see if it will help.

Re: Coolidor question
Where do you have the beads located, top or bottom?
Contrary to popular belief, humidity rises. If the beads are near the top it would stand to reason that the humidity would be higher near the top.

Re: Coolidor question
I ahve the beeds divided in half. One of the bags is on the top and the other is on the bottom. I guess I will continue to let it season. Hopefully it will evn out, if not I will by the oust fan that he wass talking about.

Re: Coolidor question
You might also try giving your beads a little more water as the dry boxes may have taken the available moisture from them.

Re: Coolidor question
Do you have a fan in there?
Sounds to me like you need a Oust fan in there to get the air to circulate! This should fix the problem! Let us know |

Re: Coolidor question
No I don't have the fan as of yet. I plan on giving it a couple more days to make sure I need it before I buy.
I did have to charge the beads this morning, and they needed a lot of water. So hopefully it is just the boxes soaking up all the water as jledou said. I will keep checking it and keep you guys posted. Thanks for the help |

Re: Coolidor question
I also think it is the boxes soaking up the moisture.
You shouldn't need a fan in a cooler that size.

Re: Coolidor question
I agree with the others who say to get a fan. I had a similar problem with my coolerdor, then I put in a small fan to circulate the air and now everything's holding steady at 65%. As someone mentioned earlier, Heartfelt Industries sell OUST fans, which are battery operated (D battery) and run on a cycle of 5min on and 15 min off. Not a bad investment. Good luck!

Re: Coolidor question
I"m with Donnie on this,,,that size cooler should not need a fan. Guess what? If you already have a fan then get a bigger cooler,,,I have one of the biggest and I keep a pound of beads in mine and have no issues at all,,,my basement stays 68-72 degrees constantly.

Re: Coolidor question
It is looking up. When I came home from work tonight, it was at 66% in the bottom. I moved the hygrometer to the top and will recheck in the morning.

Re: Coolidor question
glad to hear it, in that case it was probably the boxes soaking up the moisture.

Re: Coolidor question
The humidity problem is fixed. It has held a solid 70% for two days. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now to my next question. Is there any way to control the tempature in this thing? It is staying steady at 72-76 degrees. From what I have read on here this is not good. I do not want to have any trouble with beatles. I really need to keep the temp down. Any suggestions? |
