What is cedar wood? Humidor question.

I am looking for a larger humidor, thanks puff!!, and have been checking evil-bay. There are some good prices on there, but I am confused by their description. Here is the following description on this. I would your insight/thoughts/concerns into whether or not this is a good investment.

"
CIGAR HUMIDOR

Your finest cigar humidor deserve an equally fine display case. This humidor with an award winning design will impress.
We loaded this humdior with many top of the line features like:
THE GOVERNOR

  • Acrylic Display Top
  • 2 Brass FinishHinges
  • 2 Humidifiers and Hygrometer with Brass Finish Frame
  • Tray with Divider
  • Lined with Kiln Dried Cedar Dividers
  • Scratch Resistant Felt Lined Bottom
  • 2 Brass Carry Handles
  • 14.25 L x 9.75 W x 6.25 H
FACTS ABOUT OUR CIGAR HUMIDORS!!!
In order to provide savings for our customers and get the same value, portions of our humidor interior are made of cedar wood. Once the humidor is closed everything inside is sealed. The cedar smell will remain in the box giving positive effect on the flavor of your cigars. Therefore there is no need to make the inside of the humidor completely of cedar. If you research cigar humidors, there is no 100% cedar humidor. All manufacturers use the same method to make their humidors. The reason our prices are much better than other sellers is because we have our own manufacturer and make our own products.

Is this true? So confused

Thanks,
Landon

I thought 100% cedar would be the best?

Re: What is cedar wood? Humidor question.

The only cedar you want in your humidor is Spanish Cedar!
Regular cedar is far too aromatic and I am sure the the humidity absorption values are nowhere near the same.

Re: What is cedar wood? Humidor question.

From Wikipedia:

Spanish-cedar is the most frequently used wood for the interior veneer of humidors. It possesses the following desirable characteristics for cigar storage:
  1. It holds more moisture than most woods, so it helps maintain humidity.
  2. It imparts its aroma to cigars if they are stored in it for long enough. For the same reason, some cigars are wrapped in Spanish-cedar sheets before they are sold.
  3. Spanish-cedar wood can repel tobacco beetles. These pinhead-sized beetles can ruin entire stocks of cigars. They eat the tobacco and lay eggs, causing further infestation. They can also be discouraged by ensuring the humidor does not get hotter than 20 °C (68 °F).[1] The beetle eggs usually only hatch at around 25 °C (77 °F), although there are also instances where they will hatch at cooler temperatures if the humidity is too high.
  4. The wood properties are not prone to "warping" or "cupping" in high humidity.

I wouldn't use any other wood, except one species of mahogany, which has the same properties as spanish cedar.

I would give them a call to see if they meant Spanish Cedar, I cant see someone going through the trouble of making a humidor without knowing to use Spanish over regular cedar.

Spanish Cedar is actually a Mahogany wood, not Cedar at all.

Re: What is cedar wood? Humidor question.

I would check out some other online vendors like Cheap Humidors or Premium Humidors.

I have humi's from both and 1 from an Ebay vendor made in China. The quality of the 300 ct I bought of Ebay was inferior to the Humi's I got from the other two. They might be a few bucks more, but in the long term you'll have a better place to store your smokes.

Spanish Cedar is from the Mahogany family. It is not as aromatic as white or red cedar and better suited to keeping cigars.

I use the Ebay Humi to store my cheap everyday smokes, but I do not store any expensive smokes in it.

Re: What is cedar wood? Humidor question.

most of the humidors we buy are made in china, unless your paying 500+ for a desktop 90 count humi it will probably be made in China. but some are good like the savoys and cuban crafters and others similar companies.

Re: What is cedar wood? Humidor question.

I would never buy a no-name humidor off ebay. Most, if not all are cheap copies of popular models, made offshore and of poor quality. Ex: I was gifted a 100ct box last xmas by a very dear, well-meaning friend. Aside from the fact that it came broken, the inlay looked like it'd been done by a teenager in art class with a penknife. The cedar lining and tray were very thin and flimsy and the laquer had clearly been applied with a broom.

There are plenty of fantastic deals out there from outfits like cheaphumidors, tampahumidors, cubancrafters, etc. Stay away from ebay, unless it's a known name like Savoy, Don Salvatore, etc.

As far as cedar "repelling" beetles; hogwash. Once something is born inside a box they cant escape, "repelling" them is moot. Theyre only interested in the tobacco.

Re: What is cedar wood? Humidor question.

I want to thank you guys for the great advice. After reviewing your answers I decided to play it safe. So, I went with the light walnut 150-200 from Cheap Humidors. Waiting for delivery now will be excruciating.

Again thank you for all of the advice. I would hate to get some POS in the mail and be upset. Or worse it destroying my smokes.

Re: What is cedar wood? Humidor question.

I would avoid the cheap humidors on ebay from sellers such as "gadgetbestbuy" and "easysource." You'll get a much better product, at a similar price, at Cheap Humidors or Tampa Humidors. I bought a second at Tampa, and have been very happy.
