Maybe have a solution to the temp problems!
So today I was thinking about cigars and what not, when it occurred to me how many people in the summer suffer from temp problems. Whether it be the A/c goes out, or its just too damn hot even with it on. That led me to think of ways to fix this possibly. Here's what I came up with.
I think it'd be good for short term definitely, but maybe it could work long term as well. I've heard of people using the reusable plastic ice blocks and sitting them on top or inside to cool a humidor down, but are worried because of condensation. My thought on this is what about the humidity sheets heartfelt has? Does anyone else think that gluing them to the top and maybe a side of the humidor/coolidor may stop the condensation from dripping down on the sticks. I would think by doing this, you could have a rotation of ice packs wrapped in a towel to keep temps down during the day for a heck of a lot cheaper than a vino temp. Or maybe a few sheets around in case of an emergency? Any thoughts? |

Re: Maybe have a solution to the temp problems!
Brilliant solution to a nonexistent problem, Nick. It's not a matter of sweating to the point of water raining down. It's simply a matter of water vapor, rapidly cooling and condensing inside the vessel (humi-cooli-dor). That condensation is much heavier than the water vapor inside the vessel. This collects around, and therefore penetrates, the sticks and spikes the humidity inside them. Any condensation that collects on the wood of the humi, will be resorbed. I suppose you could get a light misting on a plastic surface, but youd need to get it really cold to do that. Since most of us only have need to drop temps by a few degrees, raining isn't an issue.
Since I am in only wooden humis, my biggest concern isnt condensation rain, its pulling moisture through the wood and between the finish layer, thereby clouding the finish, or even warping the lid. Wrapping the ice packs in towels and making sure there's a layer of plastic between the towel and the finish handle this fine. For those using coolidors, you pretty much have to put the frozen media inside. This gets a lot dicier. Care should be taken to make sure that the frozen media are insulated so as not to impart too much temp reduction of the ambient air too quickly and also that there is no chance for direct contact between those media and your cigars. Keep grinding those gears, my friend. Youre on the right track. ![]()

Re: Maybe have a solution to the temp problems!
I tried to put a few ice cubes in a empty tuna can to lower my temp. It did nicely, but for some reason it also lowered my RH to about mid 50s.... I got the RH up relatively quickly (i caught it fast enough i guess). A few days later, I tried the same again with the same results...... Now I have a Vino. I got tired of "playing games" with the high heat... The Vino is not "complete" but I do have my humis in it chilling out. And the RH inside them is still good (for me) at around 65-68.

I solved my heat problem by locking away my sticks at work. The a/c is on 24 hrs.

Re: Maybe have a solution to the temp problems!
Most people with temperature problems use a wine fridge that has a thermo-electric cooling element (vino temp, haier, etc). They make coolers with thermoelectric elements as well. They're cheaper than a vino temp, but would require an external thermostat to regulate at a specific temperature.
