Travel humidor revisited....
Hello to all:
Well in a few short months, I know have everything I think I need to enjoy and preserve my cigars, except still for a darned travel humidor. Which I will keep in my truck, and refill as necessary. I think I am swinging towards the cigar caddy 15. I have searched and found a lot of threads, but I am still unclear of some if its attributes and how people are using them, plus the optional felt dividors. So here are a bunch of questions I have and maybee you kind and always knowledgable folks can help me. 1) Does the cigar caddy 15 do a good job of keeping your smokes in their place when traveling around in a vehicle. I say this, because (I have not seen one in person), because the felt liners, seem to be soft, and it appears the cigars would always be jolting about here and there, even though so slightly, but after a couple thousand bumps in the road, would the cigar wrappers start to frey? 2) What are the advantage of those optional felt liners from one of our online brothers, who has an online store? 3) I was worried about the rh factor in the different levels, but I have seen that the felt is permeable, and thus whatever humidyfying solution you have chosen to use, will go all over. Is this true? 4) In this case of the cigar caddy, would it be better to leave wrappers on, or at least maybee to just cut off both ends of cello. 5) Has anyone have an experience, just using the enclosed humidifier, or are you better off going with the drymistat. If so, how many would you use? 6) I plan on the fifteen, because I figure a few slots will be taken up by my caliber 3, the drymistat, and a cutter and ligher. Maybee a whole row. Any downside to that.? Sorry for so many questions, I like to get things right from the beginning, if I can tap into peoples experiences. Nothing better then gaining knowledge from the tried and true. Any comments will be also taken gracefully. Much regards Jerry |

Re: Travel humidor revisited....
From what I gather Jerry, you shouldn't put the cutters, lighters, or other accessories in a humidified compartment. Most humidors have non-humidified drawers for accessories, I don't know if the caddy has such an area or not, but I would rather leave the cutter and lighter in the dash compartment than the humi itself. Hope I was some help!

The foam liners do a good job of protecting the cigars. I think you could throw the box down and hill side and not damage the cigars. 2) What are the advantage of those optional felt liners from one of our on line brothers, who has an online store? The felt liners are softer then the foam. I do not think they are necessary but if you smoke a lot of cigars with very fragile wrappers it may not hurt. 3) I was worried about the rh factor in the different levels, but I have seen that the felt is permeable, and thus whatever humidyfying solution you have chosen to use, will go all over. Is this true? I keep my cigar caddy with the top open in the cabinet. Use a water pillow in the supplied plastic bag as a humidification device. If you go this route there will be no problem with the felt if you decide to use it. The foam has worked fine for me. 4) In this case of the cigar caddy, would it be better to leave wrappers on, or at least maybee to just cut off both ends of cello. It would add some additional protection to keep the cello on. However, I never do and it has not caused a problem. 5) Has anyone have an experience, just using the enclosed humidifier, or are you better off going with the drymistat. If so, how many would you use? As mentioned above, I found the water pillow to work the best. It holds a ton of water and works well. The cigar caddy seals very well so any device should work well. 6) I plan on the fifteen, because I figure a few slots will be taken up by my caliber 3, the drymistat, and a cutter and ligher. Maybee a whole row. Any downside to that.? I just put the pillow on top and pack all 15 smokes in. Works fine. My only concern would be if you left the case in the car when it is hot. The high temperature will raise the humidity to unacceptable levels. |

Also, what I like to do with the travel, is drive my truck to the lake or ocean, or to the park. Take the whole case, and know I have everything I need, except my can of diet caffeine free pepsi. A real mans brew... Then when I either sit down at a bench, or on a rock, or on my comfy lounge chair, I can then decide what I want to smoke, and have everything with me. Plus I get some great delights, when an oldtimer(maybee I am in that category as well, LOL but dont feel like), comes along, and sees me with a cigar, I can see their eyes light up with memories past. They almost never ask me for one, or ask me what I am smoking. I always volunteer to give them one, and light it up for them. They are like an eight year old, at christmas tree or hannukah candle lighting time. I have heard the greatest stories and experiences from some of these men. Incredible. Some were just pain in the rears, but thats okay too, we are all entitiled. Thats one of the main reasons to have a small travel one, so I always have my smoke in the truck, and can offer one to anyone who desires. I feel it builds good karma, and I have always felt, you do good deeds for people without being asked, and it always comes back to you somehow when you need it. I will always put a couple of the cheapo jr alternatives in it also, so I can put a couple in the guys pocket when he leaves. It makes me feel good. I am strange that way. Much regards Jerry |

Re: Travel humidor revisited....
I have a fifteen count cigar caddy, and have used it for years, its always protected my cigars, havent broken one yet.
The fifteen count has three layers, I usually pack in ten or so on the bottom layers, and put my lighter and clipper on top, each layer is seperated by a foam divider so its no problem. Also the cigar caddy is very air tight, if Im going to be gone for a few days I dont add any humidification, and the cigars are fine, if your concerned about the humidity, toss in one of Fuentes humi packs they take up no room and little chance of overhumidifying your cigars. |

Re: Travel humidor revisited....
I have a 15ct and I too put 10 stix in and put a couple lighters and a cutter on the top to have ready.
I have never added any humidity to it and have had no problems, even after a week of uses. Good Luck Shawn

Re: Travel humidor revisited....
Jerry, how long do you plan for these sticks to stay in the traveldor? If its for a week or less, I really don't think you need to worry about humidification. Assuming you're keeping your smokes between 65-70%, and considering the quality of seal on the caddy, it's really not a concern. I also don't think you need worry about keeping accessories in it either. 70% humidity isn't really going to hurt anything. Just take them out between trips.

Its just that if I put 10 cigars in it, and choose which one I want to smoke, and one or two do not get chosen that often, they could be in their for a month. I then replace smoked ones with ones from my humis. I plan on putting 10 down under, on top have a cutter, lighter, and a drymistat, along with a caliber 3, and see how the rh goes, till I get it under control. Initially I will just throw in 10 el cheapos in their and experiment. Its coming to my favorite time to smoke here in the mid atlantic and hudson valley. I love the nip in the air, all the kids are in school, I got the world to myself monday to friday during school hours. Perfect for me and the k9. Much regards Jerry |
