Is my humidor ready?

Hi all, first post. This is a great discussion forum and I've already learned a lot from you all. I am pretty much new to cigar smoking. After reading some reviews of good entry level cigars I picked up 5 each of Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Torpedo, RP Vintage 1992 Toro, Perdomo ESV 91 Aristocrata, Ashton VSG Robusto, Ashton Classic, Macanudo Hyde Park, Perdomo Lot 23, Padron 3000 Maduros and Naturals, and some Rocky Patel Decades.

With all that I bought what looks like a decent 100 count humidor from cheaphumidors, along with the 84% seasoning bag and a caliber III digital hygrometer. I have had the humidor seasoning for about 2 days now and it is reading 68% humidity. Is it time to put my cigars in the humidor, or should I wait a bit longer? I currently have all my cigars in tupperware containers each with a drymistat tube, so hopefully that will keep them in ok shape.

I also purchased a Xykar executive lighter and it wouldn't light out of the box, so I purchased calibri butane fluid in an attempt to get it to work and it still only lights about 1 out of 10 times. Is something wrong with the lighter? Thanks for all your help, and once more, thanks for this board!

Re: Is my humidor ready?

Personally I think that you can not be too safe about seasoning your humi. I would give it atleast five more days to be safe. A week tends to be a safe amount of time to season. Your sticks should be fine in the tupperware for a couple weeks.

As far as a lighter goes. Quit wating you r money. Go to Wal-Mart and pick up a Ronson Jet-Lite. They are the best lighter you will find under $30 IMHO. And they are way under that price range. Usually in the neighborhood of $3.

yeah, go ahead and put your cigars in there.

And, Donnie, why haven't you moved this thread to the Cigar Accessory Questions board yet?

I think I waited 5 days or so to put my gars in my humi. Try messing with the flame adjuster on the lighter. Sometimes too much jet will not ignite, or too little won't either. Welcome aboard Scraggs!

Ditto on the flame adjust. I know when I first got my lighter I had to fiddle with the flame height in order for it to light and stay lit... Also make sure you purge the lighter of any air that may be in it, the air will adversely affect the flame as well.

That seasoning pack says to leave it in there, lid closed for 14 days? The ones I had did anyway. I'd suggest you do it that way. I have used them a lot. While it is slower it comes out perfectly every time (I bought some humi's as groomsman gifts and seasoned them all this way).

Re: Is my humidor ready?

Thanks everyone for your input. The lighter suggestion in particular worked great, all I had to do was adjust the strength. I asked about the cheaper one at CVS but they didn't have one, no walmarts near me. I threw in a bowl of distilled water along with the boveda 84% pack and now my humidor is reading 69% and holding there pretty consistently.

I think I'll wait til tomorrow to play it safe and then throw all my cigars in there with 3 drymistat tubes to ensure good humidity. Is 14 days of seasoning for the humidor necessary at this point? Also, are 3 drymistats overkill for a collection of about 60 cigars?

Seriously... the packs say 14 days... don't rush this. I think using the water with the pack is kind of counter productive. Those packs both give off and take out moisture. So the pack is going to pull the water from the bowl out of the air. Just put the pack in the humi and leave it sit. I have used those packs and they really do work (if you use them as directed).

Patience!

Re: Is my humidor ready?

Boveda's website says:

Quote:
Bóveda Seasoning Packets have been specifically designed to raise the moisture level in the wood of your humidor to the humidity level you’ll be storing your cigars at. The Bóveda Seasoning Packets do this the correct way—gradually—over a period of just ten days. This gradual process ensures that the wood doesn’t acquire mold, a mustiness smell, or warp—as commonly happens when following traditional seasoning methods of spraying, sponging or wiping the box down with water.
