Best Draw Tool?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for the hands-down best draw tool available. I'm just not getting what I want from coat hangers, drill bits, meat scewers, etc. I followed a thread on "Henry's draw tool" but cant seem to find where to buy. I'm convinced that the perfect tool has to have some barbs cut into it, in order to pull out some of the tobacco, thereby relieving the plug. Just shoving something round through it doesn't work, since the baccy just collapses back once heated.

Thanks for your ideas.

Re: Best Draw Tool?

Don, I took a file and made notches in my clothes hanger just like you will find on Henry's tools.
It has never failed to unplug a cigar for me. Just figured it may be something you would want to consider.

Re: Best Draw Tool?

How about a good ole' rug hook

They have less "I'll destroy your cigar if you use me" looking ones available.

Like a tiny crochet hook

I think that is what I was envisioning the whole time, yeah, crochet hooks. 2mm or smaller I'd say.

Thanks Donnie. One of the problems I have is that I am very sensitive to metallic tastes. One example is with drill bits. I can taste the metal after using it, ACK! Once the coating is off a coat hanger, Im concerned about tasting the carbon steel in my cigar. You ever taste anything from it?

The concern with a crochet hook could be if it grabs the edge of a leaf, it could end up pulling a whole section out with it and destroy the wrapper.

Re: Best Draw Tool?

If you can find a machinist with the proper knurling tools have him do that for you with whatever poker you wish to use. I have the Draw Poker Rod that I had done some time ago and as I have said before, this sucker has yet to fail me. I understand where you talked about getting that "metallic" taste in your mouth when I tried to do a tool myself and I can't stand that taste. I have a little nubber that I use where I can taste a slight metal taste when I use it towards the end of my cigar.

Re: Best Draw Tool?

Actually, Amlique may be onto something here. His post provoked me to do a search for some crochet hooks and I stumbled upon Tunisian Bamboo crochet hooks. Bamboo wont give off any metallic taste and the hooks have a softer edge, as opposed to the metal versions. I looked at some that had balled ends, but Im thinking that a straight stick might hedge your bets. If the hook felt as though it was grabbing too much tobacco, you would have an escape route, via pushing it all the way through and starting over.

What do you guys think?

Let your cigars rest before smoking them. You won't need a draw tool.

Re: Best Draw Tool?

What kind of cigars do you have trouble drawing on? Any particular shape? Try lowering you RH at all? I know when my sticks are higher RH towards 70+ I've had plug issues. I've been using the Heartfelt beads at 65 and hardly any more issues.

Also, with the bamboo skewer, did you try making multiple stabs and wiggling the stick around inside it?

Guys,
My RH is a rock-steady 65%. I've talked about dry boxing sticks in other threads forever. I'm specifically talking about ISOM cigars that were rolled during the dark ages (98-01) and sitting in my humi for months. Many of these sticks were rail spikes and if it weren't for the tremendous flavor, I'd avoid them. Point is, even at 50% humidity, they are still not gonna draw without surgery.

Shawn,
I simply cannot bring myself to pay that kind of money for $2 worth of wood, $.50 worth of man made amalgam and $1 worth of SS. I will admit that it appears to be an effective design.
I have managed to find a meat scewer with a fanned tip that seems to be working better, albeit labor intensive. Im gonna keep my eyes peeled for the bamboo crochet hooks though.

Re: Best Draw Tool?

did you notice that the rod is just a long stainless bolt with the head cut off? The handles look like slugs from a countertop or vanity. Hell i could spit these out all day long for $70! Like 95% profit.

Re: Best Draw Tool?

I think the deal with these is that Cigarmony knows he's not gonna sell many of them, hence the egregious pricing. Even at $15 (what they should cost) how many draw tools is the world really gonna buy?
