Building a humi. What do I finish the outside with?
It's mostly sp cedar wit walnut inlays. I really don't want to stain it (stain stinks), but maybe I should just shellac or laquer it. Maybe an oil finish first. I've been woodworking forever, but this is my 1st humi. What did you use??

Re: Building a humi. What do I finish the outside with?
I'm a big fan of oil under shellac but Waterlox is also a great finish. (I mostly make round stuff. No humidors.) I'm not a big fan of plastic coated wood.

Re: Building a humi. What do I finish the outside with?
I'm currently in the process of building a humi myself, black walnut that I'm going to put an ebony stain over. I am going to have to let it air out for a while......

Traditionally, lacquer is used.
You typically want to seal the wood to hold more moisture, so just staining it isn't ideal. Most high-end humidors are solid cedar construction, covered with a hardwood veiner and thick high gloss finish. |

Re: Building a humi. What do I finish the outside with?
I've built two humi's that probably hold 40-50 cigars and I used oil stain followed by 3-4 coats of laquer. Yes you have to let it dry outside before sticks go in but once you put the spanish cedar and humidity into it, the stain/laquer smell goes away. Also, a "how to build a humidor" site suggests spraying lightly the inside of the box to further help hold the moisture on the inside.

Re: Building a humi. What do I finish the outside with?
To start, I would recommend a linseed oil on the exterior only. Burned linseed oil will penetrate the pores of the wood and help to fix the seal created by whatever oil based finish you decide.

BOILED linseed oil. Commonly referred to as BLO. One of the great all time finishes. (Sam Maloof uses it.)

Re: Building a humi. What do I finish the outside with?
Ive never built a humidor, but have built several guitars. I stole a trick from 19th century banjo makers that works great. I use a dark, water based stain on a rag and lightly wipe down. The water pops the grain and draws the stain into the wood. Once completely dry, I sand the surface. The surface stain is completely (nearly) removed and only the figuring of the wood is enhanced. Clear, or laquer to taste. It produces a dramatic "3D" effect that I havent been able to produce any other way.
Good luck.

Re: Building a humi. What do I finish the outside with?
This is the last one I built... for me. This is "Althea" and boasts a one-piece, flame-into-quilt maple body. She's very dirty and very played in these pics.
Tone is very beefy, kind of like ringing a church bell and she sustains forever. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
