Xikar Cutter
I have a pretty stupid question about xikar cutters and I searched for a bit but couldn't find the answer. Is the xi1 xi2 and xi3 all the same except the wing pieces? I went to xikar's website and the description of each of them were the same. I was wondering, if I didn't care about the aesthetics of the cutter would the xi1 work just the same as the xi2 or xi3?

Re: Xikar Cutter
The xi2 are plastic like polymer feel...
They seem to work as well as the others from what I've heard. I have some buddies who have them, but haven't used one myself. They say they can't tell. Last edited by fuente~fuente; 09-30-2009 at 09:15 PM.. |

Re: Xikar Cutter
To be fair... The Xi2 is actually a "lightweight nylon fiberglass composite" according to their website... Not a plastic polymer like I just posted.

Re: Xikar Cutter
The blades on all the xi series are the same. The difference is in the body. The xi2 gives you just as good of performance as the others and is the cheapest of the bunch.
xi - metal xi2 - plastic/nylon xi3 - metal with wood/fancy edges |

Re: Xikar Cutter
While the blades may be the same, I would suggest that the xi and xi3 have superior "mechanisms" (if that is the right word). Being a frugal sort, I first purchased an xi2, but subsequently "upgraded" to an xi. I am much happier with the xi and believe it to be well worth the higher price. I cannot speak to whether the move from xi to xi3 is worth the extra dough.

Re: Xikar Cutter
Thanx for the responses. I want to buy a nicer cutter than the $3 one I have right now. As for the claim that the mechanism in the xi1 and xi3 being better, can anyone else verify this? I'm trying to get a cheap on but I don't want to buy one that I have to keep sending back. Thank you.

Re: Xikar Cutter
I dont see any difference in the actual machanism. The difference is in the release button. One has a fixed, round button and the other, an oval button with a screw.

Great Question. My favorite college professor used to say, "If you have a question don't hesitate to ask, because chances are others in the room have the same question." So in answer to your question... They are not all the same. The blades for all XIKAR cutters are made of high quality 440 stainless steel, but the bodies of the cutters, depending on the model, can be different. The Xi1 is built with an all aluminum body. A rivet holds the cutter together at the pivot. The Xi2 and Xi3 are joined at the pivot with a torx screw. Xi2s are made of a nylon-reinforced resin whereas all Xi3 cutters have a stainless steel body. The Xi3 Titanium F-2 Black and Xi3 Titanium Spectra go one step further with a titanium coating which has been pigmented by electrical charge. And last but not least, the Xi3 Tech has a bead blasted finish. So in short they are not all the same, but are simlar. As for the wings the possiblities are practically endless. Thanks for asking and I hope that helps, Jacob XIKAR for Life

Re: Xikar Cutter
Thank you all for the replies. I have kinda decided on the cutter I want. I know I want the Redwood one. But I'm going to explore some of the other brands available as well.

Re: Xikar Cutter
I can't add too much except to say that I have the Xi (cheapest model) and really love it. They also have a great warranty and will sharpen the blades for you if they get dull.

Re: Xikar Cutter
Haha. I happen to be one of those "others in the room" that Jacob mentioned. Thanks for asking the question!
I picked up the Xikar MTX the other day when it was on sale, and would also suggest you take a look at it. It's the scissors that Xikar puts out. I really like the rosewood too. A really nice piece, but of course, it costs a bit more. Does anyone know if the Mean Sardine is also the same material blade? |
