New Hygrometer

I just got a new Caliber III digital hygrometer and it says in the manual NOT to salt test it. I was wondering why it would say that and if I should do it anyway to test its accuracy. It also says NOT to do the less accurate wrap a wet towel method of calibration.

Re: New Hygrometer

I recently got a few of these too and was wondering the same thing. I got one of these a few years ago before I was even into cigars just to put by our house thermostat to monitor humidity in the house. The research I did at that time led me to believe these were the best most accurate hygrometers so that's why I went with this brand. I haven't done the test yet, but thought I would try it just for kicks one of these days. I had/have the same questions as you.

Re: New Hygrometer

Interesting. If it says not to I probably would not do it. However, I would call the manufacturer to ask how you can test it's accuracy.

Cheers,
Brad

If you think it is off you can mail it to them and they will check it and replace free of charge if not within specs. I checked mine against others and found it dead on.

Re: New Hygrometer

I cannot see a salt test damaging the performance of a digital hygrometer but i guess the only safe way is to salt test an analog one and then compare the two readings inside the humidor. BTW smoking a gurkha master select right now and it is an outstanding smoke.

Test it to be sure. I would suggest the boveda test kit. Mine were off.

Re: New Hygrometer

I expect because the salt might cause corrosion of the inner workings, not the only hygro I have seen that warning on. I have tried many different brands over the years, and have found the Western Caliber to consistently be the most accurate. I have nine of them. All tested with Boveda Paks, you don't need the test kit, any Boveda Pak will do. All but one of my hygros were one or two percent off, or right on the money. That one was three percent off. You aren't going to do any better than that for a hygro in this price range, and even some much more expensive ones aren't as good.

Off by 5 - I switched to the hygrosets - they are adjustable - and when tested I only had one that was 1 degree off. I adjusted 1 click, retested and spot on.
