Box open or closed?

I am getting a coolerdor ready to hold boxes. Should I leave them open or closed while in the coolerdor? I have noticed from photos that many just put them in closed.

Re: Box open or closed?

closed will be fine as long as the boxes dont have airtight seals, most wooden boxes wont, but if you are unsure place soething to wedge to lid open a little.

Re: Box open or closed?

If the lids are attached to the box, I leave them on. If they slide off, I remove them, and use the lids as kind of a liner for the rest of the cooler. I haven't noticed a big difference in boxes I keep open vs closed, so it's pretty much personal preference.

Re: Box open or closed?

I don't think it makes much difference. I've always stored mine open, but I recently received a box from a member here who had them stored closed up for three years. They were in fantastic shape.

If you leave them open they will be more subject to changes in temperature and humidity when you open and close your cooler. And although my knowledge is more academic than experiential with regard to the following... most BOTLs with experience aging cigars will tell you that they age best and most gracefully when they are left undisturbed in conditions with constant and proper humidity and somewhat restricted airflow.

I'd leave the boxes closed. There's no way that any box seal is going to prevent the minimal necessary air exchange. If you were going to store a dozen boxes in a coolerdor for a few years, I'd treat the boxes like individual cigars; rotating top to bottom every six months or so. Also turn the boxes upside down every other rotation cycle. And don't open them or you'll just want to smoke them right away. Maybe even put a sticker with a target date on each box; "Do not open until 2009/02/23" or something.

If your aging them leave the lid closed. It is leess tempting that way.

Re: Box open or closed?

Closed offers better protection and buffering of temperature and humidity fluctuations. Your sticks will age better, more gently this way.

Re: Box open or closed?

I have boxes that I HOPE not to open till Memorial Day '07 that are still in the shipping cello. If I open them to look at them, they're gonna be smoked.
