butane - drug store or 3x, 4x, 5x filtered?

I love the convenience of butane lighters but also don't enjoy the taste of butane. Normally I light my cigars with a ceder spill but it takes awhile and I'm not always in a location where it's practical.

My question is, once you get past 3x filtered butane can you really tell a difference?

I know that my drug store junk (ronson) makes my cigars taste terrible.

Please advise...

I have really never noticed the taste of butane when smoking cigars. Let me try one of my "alternative" ways of lighting and I'll report back. But I usually just buy the Ronson ones. I am tempted to try other brands because they are only $5 for 3x filtered at my B&M. But from my understanding of things the filtered butane is just to protect your lighter from getting clogged up. I may be wrong.

I recomend Vector 5x, it prevents clogging and burns cleaner and hotter. Most B&M's have them for $5 or $6.

Vector, Lava or King Butane. Yes, the better filtered butane the better your lighter will be esp. if you have one of those expensive suckers. My ronson will fire up with just about anything.

Butane is supposed to be tasteless. Maybe you miss the flavor added by the cedar? I've never tried lighting a cigar with anything other than my butane lighter. I'll have to give cedar a shot sometime.

I havent noticed any taste from my butane lighter.

I've never used anything but colibri (now xikar) which is only 3x filtered. I've never tasted it. I have had flavor effected by lighting too aggressively. This is my worst sin.

In thoery, the cleaner the fuel the better. Two things kill torches; clogging, from the inside and deposits from the outside. More highly filtered will be far less likely to clog, and since it burns hotter, far less likely to leave deposits.

Ive never noticed it imparting a flavor though and as far as your Ronson Im preety sure that going from one butane torch to another will not affect the taste perhaps as others have mentioned your lighting it too hot that changes flavors and the cedar definitely has a nice flavor I should do that more often.

I use Ronson Butane in my Jetlight. Not really noticed a tate.

Use a Zippo for two weeks. You'll never complain about butane again.


I actually prefer butane over matches or cedar, because the wood/sulfur imparts too much flavor.

It may also depend on your technique. Torch lighters burn much hotter than cedar. It's very easy to completely char the foot while trying to toast it, thus ruining the flavor.

I've always used butane and I've never tasted it either. Those are some sensitive taste buds, maybe you need to become a professional cigar taster. "There were hints of peanuts and butane in the robusto I puffed".

I used the Ronson stuff until I came across Lucienne 4X. IMO, there is a huge difference. I'm assuming you purge your cigar after the first good draw, am I right?

I thought that was the whole reason behind using butane to begin with was It's convenience, relatively odorless , & flavorless characteristics?

The more filtered the better for your lighter. I've even been told not to put Vector fuel in my new X-tend, which suprised me. They said use only Dupont or Xikar. I'll guess I'll take their word for it, but the little cans of Dupunt fuel run around $11!!!!

5x, its just a tad bit more, but I just feel better about using it.

Oh, when I was deployed to Afghanistan, the only place I could find butane was at the local market. It was horrible!!!! It had that sulfur smell, tasted like sulfur. Eight months I used that stuff in the Ronson. Then I met a Brit that had some better stuff. The difference was amazing.

I use Lucienne also, and I have never noticed a taste of butane
