Used humidor from eBay

Hi there!

I 'm new in here and I just have received a used desktop humidor I purchased from the eBay. I 'd like to ask you a couple of things since I have never had a real look at a new humidor.

First, is it supposed the interior cedar lining of the humidor to be removable or in other words, am I supposed to be able to removed the bottom and the side pieces of cedar wood from the inside of the humidor? In my case of used humidor I was able to remove both the bottom and the side pieces of cedar woodvery easily. I am wondering if this is good for maintaining, after of course putting them back, a good environment for my stogies or if the humidity is going to be well maintained at the interior of the humidor?

Second, as I look at the outside case of the humidor and at the back of it, where the hinges are located, I noticed that when the lid closes it leaves a small gap of about 0.07 inches (or about 2mm). Is this again a good sign for a well working humidor?

Please advise me this used desktop humidor I bought from eBay is suitable to store some stogies in it or is it totally a waste of money and back luck?

No and no. If the lining is coming off, bad sign, imho probably an uber cheap design. And a good seal is crucial for maintaing even humidy, if it doesn't close properly your gonna have problems.

Hope you didn't pay much for it.

Sounds like you got hosed, unfortunately. You'll want that cedar in place and intact and you definitely don't want that gaping 2mm gap. Did you do the lid drop test to determine the seal? I'll assume with a 2mm gap, there has to be problems.

I would see if they would give you some type of refund. Its best not to buy a "used" humidor from ebay....as I'm sure you have found that out now.

Fortunately, I was able to get a FULL refund (!!!) from the seller from eBay. From now on I would have to be very careful...

Many thanks for your replies!

You don't have to blow the bank, or anything, but would you store $10,000 in a $20 safe? I doubt it..

However, that's what you are doing if you store your stogies in too cheap a humidor.

Re: Used humidor from eBay

Gotta respectfully disagree with my fellow BOTL's on this one.

I think it has a great deal to do with who the manufacturer is. For example, Reed and Barton humidors sold under the Diamond Crown label are widely considered to be among the finest on the market. With prices ranging from roughly $200 to roughly $800 (MSRP of course), they have been lauded by many cigar magazine writers and editors as being a great value - even that THAT price.

The R&B 'Colonial' series humidors are constructed using a dual-wall method, the outer wall is genuine kiln dried hardwood - Cherry, Mahagony or Ash - the interior wall is constructed of miter cut cedar panels about 1/2" in thickness. These panels are removable, per the illustration on my website: CLICKY. However, their 'Continental' series inlaid humidors do NOT have removable linings.

So, I wouldn't outright dismiss a humidor just on those grounds alone. However, common sense prevails. One must take the overall factors into consideration. If it's a 'bargain' humidor which has removable panels, then the probability is that they're removable because it's a cost saving strategy, and it might call into question the construction of the rest of the box. However, if an Elie Bleu or Dunhill humidor has removable linings, I'd say it's probably done for an entirely different reason.

Just my two cents.

I got one of these a while back to put singles in @ 60% RH for smoking. They have upped it $ 10 since but still a good value.

Re: Used humidor from eBay

Here's another site with great customer service
http://www.tampahumidor.com/sitedire...45610727067CA2

I have the Trivoli cabinet from them and I'm very happy with both CS and the humidor.

Well - I own the two Reed and Barton's pictured below. The larger one is actually pictured in my thread about updating the humidifier.

Anyway - I paid the money for these two simply because I wanted them and they fit the bill for where they reside. Without a doubt both of them - from construction, to fit, to materials and to the finish - every last bit of them is simply impeccable. Even down to the duster bags they are shipped in – just simply quality all the way. I don’t regret at all having spent the money and without a doubt they could be passed down generations.

The larger one – you can remove the panels by hand with some force – they are cut very tight. The smaller one I can’t get out by hand – would need a small pry bar to remove them.

Hmmmmmm. Forgot about the smaller desktop models. It's possible that the smaller one you have is just very tightly friction fit and they used a rubber mallet to tap them into place. But you do make my point for me. I don't think that any given humidor should be considered to be 2nd or 3rd rate solely because the cedar is removable. I just think there are more factors to consider.
