Problem with a Western Caliber III

I was wondering if anyone has had problems with their Western Caliber III digital hygrometer/thermometer?

My problem is as follows: If I monitor the unit throughout the day, I will see a range of lets say 68-72F, however, when I check the high and low temp, I will see something like 99F and 40F. So for one 10 second period, for some reason it thought it was 99F. So as you can imagine, this makes the whole high/low feature completely useless.

Anyone else had this problem?

Did you try resetting it?

What does that mean exactly? After I check the high and low, I always hit the second button to reset the temperatures. Then the process repeats itself, every day and every night, when I check the high and low.

Is there some master reset I don't know about?

It has a way to reset the high and low. What you are seeing is the high and low since the last reset, could have been months ago. There should be a method to reset the high and low in the directions.

I reset it every morning and every night when I check the high/low temp. I have been checking if twice a day since I have been having problems with it. So it is showing me that a high of 99F occurred during that day (or night) which is not possible.

I just dug out the instructions.
1. Press button 1 to view high temp and rh. Press button 2 to reset and begin new recording.
2. press button 1 within 5 seconds to view low temp and rh. Press button 2 to reset and begin new recording. The CALIBER III will return to current temp and rh display after 5 seconds.

That is exactly what I do and I still have the problem stated above. Anyone else had this problem or is mine defective?

I have noticed the same thing. I think when the battery get a little low the hi and low temps will say outragous things. Like 102 for a high and -11 for a low. But it monitors in real-time accuratly. I don't pay attention to highs and lows as I know they sit at the same temp 24/7. I wouldn't worry about it unless you are worried about how warm it gets where they sit? If so, get a Radio Shack temp/hygro with the same hi/low memory to monitor the outside of the humi.

It definetly resets, it just goes a little haywire for a couple of 10 sec periods during the day.

I think NCRadioMan has seen the same thing. As he noted, I believe the real time is accurate, I just would like to be able to know how hot/cold the humi was during the day when I wasn't home. Today it said the humi got to 112F and 24F, I surprise my sticks didn't smoke themselves at that temp. Its like going straight from the hot tub into a walk-in freezer. I know they didn't get much above 71-72, but I would like to know for sure.

I might try changing the battery to see if that solves the problem.

Aaron, I've got a caliber III as well and it certainly doesn't seem to be doing what yours is. I've calibrated mine in the salt test and it reads +2 degrees higher. But I've also purchased the radio shack hydrometers and salt tested them as well. I've got both the caliber and the radio shack hygrometers in one of my humis and they're both steady.

I recommend radio shack as well, inexpensive and pretty reliable in general. They're also guarranteed and can be returned easily if they're really off.

One of mine shipped with a weak battery, it only lasted two weeks, maybe you should try a new one!

Re: Problem with a Western Caliber III

I have 3 of these in my humidors and always reset them at the beginning of the month. Here are my readings as of this morning.

Current High Low
66/65 82/65 57/57
65/65 75/70 60/59
64/65 72/68 60/59

As NCRadio Man said, a low battery can cause the reading to be outrageous at both ends of the spectrum. Get a new battery at Walgreen otherwise I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Re: Problem with a Western Caliber III

Thanks for the responses, I will try a new battery and if that doesn't work, I will give Western a call. Might try the radio shack one as well.
