Setting up a new coolerdor

I think I am on my way down the slope. I am in the process of setting up my coolerdor. I pretty much got all the plastic smell out of it. I will order ½ pound of beads on Monday that should be enough right? Also to speed up the process I put a couple of old cigar boxes (that I will not use later) in there to take out the last of the plastic smell. Is that a good or bad idea?

Hey, get that storage space ready, you're gonna need it. It sounds like you're on the right track. Try a 'search' on the topic you want to get the most responses.

Looks like you have it figured out. A coolerdor with 1/2 lb of beads is usualy dead on to keep them stogies fresh. You may want to keep those boxes in there for singles, good idea. Enjoy!

Yes, the cigar boxes are a good idea - if they're spanish cedar! I took it one step farther and bought spanish cedar from a chain called Woodcraft and wedged them in on the sides. The odor from this fresh spanish cedar is awesome. This chemical emitted by cedrela odorata aids in aging and the wood helps stabilize the humidity level, too.

Enjoy your new obsession! :P

If you have not already check out this thread:

I found it very helpful in setting up mine. I use the Oasis XL Plus along with beads. Beads are there as a buffer and support to maintain the RH.

The best way to get rid of the plastic smell is to wash it out with mild soap and water. then put it outside in the sun to air out.

Or dig out your 20 year old 48qt cooler from the attic, worked like a charm except it was to darn small. I bought a new one (bigger) and then ran across one larger, older and well seasoned a few days later at a moving sale for $5.00. Coolers and more coolers, I'm happy but the wife is far from thrilled.

Re: Setting up a new coolerdor

Beads came in today. Thanks Viper great service as usual. I think the plastic smell is all gone now hopefully will check again in the morning. I think now it is time to begin to start the orders to stock it. Thinking a box of AF Chateau Fuente Maduro, SP Maduro Quixote, and RyJ Bully. Plus a few Samplers and 5ers.

Re: Setting up a new coolerdor

Well the coolerdor is now complete (for now) and stocked. It holds a constant 66% humidity and a temp of around 70. I now see why everyone said to go bigger. Well I guess I will just have to smoke more. Thanks for all of your help.

Sounds good-id always leave a couple of empty boxes in to store singles in, or else they roll about and get lost/damaged.
