My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

I just received a new vicksburg humi and there is sap on the trays that go in the top. Has anyone else had this issue and if so what is the best way to deal with the evil SAP.

Re: My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

I got some spanish cedar from Rockler that had sap on it. I lightly wiped it with Denaturated Alcohol and then sanded them down. There is stains on the cedar where the sap was but it is not sticky any more. This cedar was used in my winecoolidor as shelves. I am not that worried about it because I keep all my stogies in boxes in there. Rockler is sending me new pieces but I went ahead and used what I had. I would not want to store single on those shelves. Have you called the place you got the box from? I would have them send me a new tray or trays. If you decide to deal with the sap yourself make sure you wear a dustmask if you do any sanding. Hope it all works out for ya.

Re: My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

try removing it with a razor blade--if you sand it it will get imbeded in the wood grain

Re: My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

I wouldn't sand it, if you do make sure you wear a mask because that stuff is nasty.

Call Bargainhumidors and tell them about it. They are good people for the most part and hopefully will do right.

Re: My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

I talked to Bargainhumidors and they say that during the hot weather especially in areas like Texas, being in the hot delivery trucks will cause the wood to "weep". They said to remove the sap with denatured or rubbing alcohol and let the wood completely dry of the alcohol before closing the humi back up. She said that it shouldn't be a problem after the humi is at a constant temp and humidity.

I agree with one of the above posters that removing as much of the sap as possible with a knife ahead of the cleaning process would be the best idea.

Here is the email from Bargain Humidors....

Quote:
Cedar has a tendency to bleed a sap when exposed to heat. Generally this
happens during transit of the humidors to customers in hot delivery trucks
this time of year.
The resin is very sticky and can usually be removed with acetone or rubbing
alcohol and a cloth. The sticky resin does not impair the quality of the
cigars, however it may damage the outside cigar leaves if the cigars come
into direct contact with the resin.

After the use of cleaning agents the humidor must be thoroughly ventilated
before cigars are placed back into the humidor. In your case just let the
shelves/trays air out completely before placing back into the humidor.

Once the humidor is seasoned and in an even temperature this should not
happen.

Thank you,

Jen Conrad

Good news man, keep us posted on how this goes. I am curious in case I ever get SAP on any of my humidors when shipped.

Re: My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

Well I have my humi seasoning right now. I removed the SAP with vodka , They were talking about using alcohol and waiting for it to dry so it doesn't impart any flavors, so I picked an alcohol that at least has a good flavor and very little scent. It worked pretty well but took some elbow grease. I will keep everyone updated if I have anymore sap issues.

Hmmmm...

For some reason, I remember reading somewhere that a little 'weep' was a good thing, and indicated the use of quality wood. Did I misunderstand?

Re: My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

It would not be good it a cigar with no celo touched the sap. It is VERY sticky and would definitely tear the wrapper.

Re: My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

Here's what I did: I waited.

I waited a few days and most of the sap actually dried up, then I just sprayed a bit of distilled water on a paper towel and dabbed at it continuously with the paper towel, and my fingers, until all the "stickiness" was gone.

I did that with all four trays and the bottom, and everything is fine and dandy now.

I'm content.

Re: My New Vicksburg has SAP on the trays

as long as you make sure that the stickiness is gone i would think it would impart a good woody flavor of anything the enters that humi, but I could be wrong...being a newb and all.

The wood itself has this effect but taking the sticky out of the sap would be difficult at best. This stuff was crazy sticky.

The humi is now the home for my entire collection with lots of room to spare ATM.
