Talking humi help

Wow there are a lot of humi questions today...

Well on to mine i have a new humi "The Connoisseur 1200 Cigar Cabinet Humidor; from Cheaphumidors.com " that should be landing on my door step sometime Wednesday (i love my wife), and was hoping to solicit some of your sage advice as to the bead setup in a cabinet humidor (now i know how to work the beads they currently keep my 300 and 100 count quite happy). Just kind of currious how to go about organizing/splitting the beads up.

now i just need to fill it he-he

Thanks in advance,

Re: humi help

I would either put the beads in tubes or bags and just throw them on all the different shelves.

Just spread them out don't leave them in one big bowl at the bottom

Hope that helps.

Grats on the humi brother

Re: humi help

I know lots of BOTLs on the forum use converted oust fans (do a search on that-i think it will work) to help the RH circulate and therefore keep it even amongst the large cabinet so the beads are most efficient.

Re: humi help

Good advice from both ShawnP and Baric.

The beads work best when you make use of their surface area. So it's better to have them in a tube; bag; or shallow, wide dish than in a narrow deep dish. Spread them out on different shelves so that you have good coverage. Then use a couple of Oust fans without the scent cartridge to move just a little bit of air around. You can get these at the grocery or drug store.

Use a couple of calibrated hygrometers in different spots in the cabinet to check the RH for consistency. Once your humi is seasoned and relatively stable, it might take several days and some experimentation for you to figure out how to best distribute the beads. Remember that humidity will tend to be higher at the bottom rather than at the top of your humidor, but you can still work to even this out.

The beads thread should have a formula that tells you how many beads you will need for the space you are trying to control. When in doubt, use more. It will help keep things stable longer without you having to recharge or dry out your beads.

Re: humi help

so would splitting the 2-2 1/2 pounds of beads up into half pound bags with a small (3-4") directional fan on the bottom and an oust fan up top do the trick?

Sounds good, so long as you remember whiteboard's advice and make the most of the bead's surface area. Also try to space the beads out evenly throughout the humi so that none of them are, in effect, 'working the other's ground' (which due to the nature of the beads would be inefficient. The trick with the fans is to ensure that they can circulate the air and RH around well-so ensure they are not covered or surrounded too much-on the whole, just exercise common sense when placing fans/beads and youll do fine. if you find an inbalance in RH (after [erhaps a small trial period of running), youll know you havent quite got the right set up and can tweak it accordingly!

Re: humi help

The best would be to put the beads in 1/2 pound pabgs and distribute then throughout the humidor. This will help with the balance of the cabinet. Also adding the Oust fans will help. The two systems working together should give you good results.

Re: humi help

I wouldn't, I'd be afraid the wood would pull the moisture out of the beads.
Maybe a ziplock baggie underneath the beads might work better.
