Ventilation Help
It's the dog days of summer but I'm thinking ahead to the cold weather. I have a room in the basement (~20x12) that's all mine. I just have to figure out how to ventilate it for smoking.
The room has a false ceiling and small half window. Last year I sealed off the vents and cold air return and put an 80 cfm duct fan in the window. Smoke hung heavy but worse, my daughters room on the second floor got stinky. Needless to say, this put the kabosh on smoking in there. Thought about putting a larger exhaust fan in but without heated makeup air I'd just be sucking heat out of the rest of the house. Any ideas?

Re: Ventilation Help
You could try a couple of hepa filters a bigger electrostatic filter.
We have one of these for my sons allergies, but I don't smoke in the house so i don't know if it works well on smoke. it's also very expensive. http://www.allergybegone.com/friedri...r-filter1.html For an exhaust fan to work properly you need fresh air coming into the room from somewhere as well. |

Re: Ventilation Help
There have been a lot of threads over the last few years and I don't know if anyone has figured it out.. Since you have the exhaust fan,,I would buy an ozone air purifier like Ecoquest (some say that ozone may be harmful, I have had one running for a year in my office and have had no side effects) the ozone will get rid of the smoke smell .. After you are done smoking just put the unit on sanitize, leave the room and it will work wonders..

Just need to run a vent to the outside. Hope this helps. ~Mark . |

But I think the problem is making up air loss from the exhaust fan. A thought ocurred to me - could I run makeup air into the room directly from outside? Would just need to heat it. I wonder if there are any window mounted, heated air makeup units?

Re: Ventilation Help
Oooppsss...I did leave it out.
http://www.iaqsource.com/index.php?m...0&prod_id=1946 They do have models with heaters and lights as well. Keep an eye on the sones, the lower the number the more quite it will be. Getting into units with heat recover are expensive, so I guess it would depend on your budget. Venmar HRV 1200i (NAWMSL); Aluminum core, 2 speed Direct Drive Heat Recovery Unit with an additional Electronic Air Cleaner with a Carbon prefilter... I know someone who has this unit and it is unfreaking believable! (I don't dare ask how much it ran him though) ~Mark |
