Humidor in Fridge??!

Hey, All:

I know not to put cigars by themselves in a fridge, but how about putting a small count humidor in a fridge? I have room and my apartment gets too hot during the day. Would the main problem be the low temp of the fridge?

Thanks!

Re: Humidor in Fridge??!

The fridge is probably too cold. Also, you don't want the big swings in temp. when you move them into the fridge for the day. I could be wrong, but it sounds like a bad idea. No harm in asking though, let's see what the FOG's say.

Re: Humidor in Fridge??!

I was also thinking one of those temperature controllers that can be attached to a fridge to control the temp could be used in conjunction with a coolerdor idea. An old, used, fridge could be purchased and then a coolerdor placed inside. Depending on the size of the fridge, multiple stacked coolerdors could be placed inside the fridge. Even if it was a defrost unit, it shouldn't matter because the humidty will be controlled within the coolerdor. Seems like this would be a less expensive option over a wine coolerdor.

If your going to go the route of getting one of the Johnson temp controllers and a fridge or freezer - you don't need to put the coolers inside. Just put your smokes directly into the fridge/freezer. Install a humidfier and a fan or two and your good to go.

Re: Humidor in Fridge??!

How hot does your place get?
I'm probably not the most knowledgeable, but if your place is consistently over 80* then I would say yes. Put your humi in the fridge. If you do that, then I think you should leave it there. You don't want a constent shift in temp. This would be a good short term solution. I don't think there is anything wrong with it as long as you're not constantly taking it in and out of the fridge. This would be better then risking beetles in my opinion. If you can eventually set up a fridgador and set the temp higher then a normal fridge, but lower then 80* then that is good for the long term.

Re: Humidor in Fridge??!

If you are bent on placing your smokes in a fridge why not buy one of those small fridges that are made to fit under a bar? They are pretty cheap (I think I've seen them under $100.00) and would be much less hassle than parting out an old fridge. Or maybe pickup one of those wine coolers. They are probably more temp controlable than a fridge.

Re: Humidor in Fridge??!

The old fridge idea was a crazy thought I had. I was, however, trying to come up with some cheaper sollutions than the wine cooler suggestion.

I don't plan on filling up one of those things for quite some time.

I have plenty of room in my current fridge to put my small 20ct humidor. I think my fridge gets down to around 45 degrees.

Re: Humidor in Fridge??!

For a fridg-a-dor, get one that does NOT have an auto defrost, the auto defrost pulls the humidity out of the air. Put a temp regulator on it and you have a humidor with lotsa room.

I don't know which answer(s) to your post that you are reading and not reading - but - thousands of other also have had the same crazy thought of using an old fridge or freezer - hence the fact that Johnson Controls makes a few units - such as you mentioned in your post #3 above.

It's really not hard - go ahead and get yourself a used fridge or freezer. Buy and install the controller. Install you humidifier. Install your cigars without the coolers. Your done. A fan though would be an extra bonus.

And no - you don't want to be putting your smokes in a active fridge along with your milk and eggs - it will suck the moisture right out of them as that's what a fridge does.

I still say you just put the whole humi in the fridge for now.
I am making a couple of assumptions - 1) you don't have many smokes and only have the 1 small humi. That being the case, just put the whole thing in and leave it there. If and when you get a bigger collection then you can worry about the fridgeador. 2) Your place is stinking hot (well above 80* every day).

both of your assumptions are correct.

what should I watch out for when taking cigars out of the humidor/fridge and smoking them??

Re: Humidor in Fridge??!

I would avoid putting your cigars in the fridge altogether. Someone above has already mentioned the fact that a fridge without added humidification will dry out your cigars. But I'm not sure I saw anyone mention (unless I just skimmed over it) how dissapointed you will be to light up an onion or fish flavored stogie. I just think this is a bad idea entirely.

I didn't say stick the smokes in the vegetable or fish drawer! I said put the humi in the fridge. Make sure the humi is closed and has a proper humidification device. You don't think a Canadian winter or the Arizona desert will suck the humidity out of a cigar? I believe that a decent humidor with a decent humi tidy device is designed for precisely this type of situation. Besides, I'd rather smoke an onion flavored cigar then a beetle sh!t flavored cigar any day.
