Cigar Cutting Utensil's

Im Truely at a state of confusion. Ive been taught right off the bat to cut everything with a cutter. Then i read that if the cigar is to big to cut the end without removing the cap you punch it. But some people punch Anything they can get ahold of, while others say if you punch a large cigar the tars will concentrate at the tip and give the taste of ..well ...tar. lol any advice for a noob as myself. i understand there has to be a million of these questions but the more the better, Atleast it may help out others with the same worries
Thanks alot S.T-

Re: Cigar Cutting Utensil's

Do what you want. What do you prefer? There are no 'rules' on what to use. Heck I've used my pocket knife, scissors, razor blades, whatever's handy if I don't have my cutter on me. I've also used a match, bic, zippo, grill lighter, etc to light a cigar. I've used cutter and punches on the same cigar and I didn't really notice a big difference from one to the other. Use what appeals/works for you. However, you wouldn't want to use a punch on something with a really small ring gage, and like you mentioned, a cutter may not work on something with a large ring gage.

Relax, and enjoy the smoke.

Ive used a craft knife before and its given me a better cut than many cigar cutters ive tried especially since it gives you a lot more control. find what you like cutting it with (punch, knife, cutter, cigar scissors) and use that-everyones different after all and there is no hard and fast rule to cutting gars.

Re: Cigar Cutting Utensil's

As stated - it's your cigar, cut or punch it anyway that you like.

The problem that I see with most punches is that the punch itself is way to small. I use a punch a lot - but my punch has two sizes. Depending on which way you twist it to expose the punch. The smaller one which is pretty much standard is about 3/16 to a 1/4 inch in dia. The other one is about 9/16 inch and I use it about 98% of the time. So there is no draw problems there.

I only use my punch on small ring gauges everything else, I use my Palio or Porsche SAK.

The punch is also great in an emergency!

Re: Cigar Cutting Utensil's

Formerly, I used an Xikar cutter almost always. Now I use the Xikar cigar tool scissors and found that, with a little practice, I'm able to get a precise cut every time.

Re: Cigar Cutting Utensil's

I don't have a punch never used one although some friends have. I use my Havana Cutter that is logoed JM Cigars in Exton PA. Before that I used my Zino Double blade. For some smaller RG's I have been known to use the scissors on my Swiss Army Knife.
