Temp Regulation
In the summer it stays between 75 and 80 degrees inside the house, way too hot for the stogies so here is what I am doing to help control the temp. I’ve only been at this for a couple of months so until I have the budget for a wine cooler I’ve been using a regular cooler, setting the humidor inside and putting a freezer pack inside on a towel next to the humidor. I close the lid but leave it cracked to keep it from getting too cold inside and to help keep humidity from dropping too fast. One freezer pack is good for about 12-14 hours, the temp slowly drops to about 65 or so inside the humi and then starts to rise again, at about 71 degrees or so I change the freezer pack. I’m using beads so the RH stays constant. It can be a pain to remember to change the packs but I have a wireless hydrometer from Radio Shack to help me keep an eye on it. What do you think? I did a search but didn’t find anyone doing it quite this way. I've attached pics.

Re: Temp Regulation
Whatever works...works. If the temp is staying somewhat constant and out of the danger zone; the RH is fairly stable and you aren't getting condensation...then it should work. Creative solution, but a lot of effort!
On the other hand, I'm spending a fortune on air conditioning. ![]() |

Guess I ought to invest in a wine cooler.

Re: Temp Regulation
Its really not too much work, I change the freezer pack in the morning before I go to work and again at night whenever the temp gets above 70.

Re: Temp Regulation
I think this is an excellent solution to the temperature control problem. I like it. Besides, wine coolers can be noisy, and I'd quit smoking before I'd set my house air at 68. I'd have to get a job.

Re: Temp Regulation
I live in Ohio and I used to have the same temperature problem. There are 2 easy solutions because changing an ice pack is too much hastle...As a fellow gorilla once said "cigars are to be enjoyed, not worried over"
Solution 1: Put the humidor/cooler in the basement, since heat rises the basement usually is a few if not 10 degrees cooler (at least at my house). Solution 2: Put the humidor/cooler in the bottom of a closet or amour (this is what I do), keep the doors shut on it and try to avoid leaving electronics on for too long, Keep drapes shut...no sunlight in the room...As long as you have some kind of A/C your temp should stay at around 69-72. Again....this works in my house, results may vary. |
