Avanti or Edgestar 28 thermoelectric wine cooler?

I'm looking into either the Avanti EWC28 28 Bottle Thermoelectric Wine Cooler or the EdgeStar Deluxe 28 Bottle Thermoelectric Wine Cooler.

There doesn't seem to be much difference in the two. I think I like the Edgestar a little better due to the wood shelving. Otherwise the sizes etc are pretty much the same. Both seem to have built in fans inside and out.

I would use:
1 Johnson Controller.
2 lbs of beads (split top and bottom).
1 or 2 oust fans.
Leaving a few bottles of wine in there so it would have some mass to help stabilize the temperature.
Retain some of the teak wood shelves but add some cedar.

The best prices I have found are at compactappliances on ebay.

Anything I am missing comparing the two models?

Re: Avanti or Edgestar 28 thermoelectric wine cooler?

The wood shelving is not a plus, it is not sp cedar and appears to be just a facing anyway. I have the Edgestar model without the wood shelves (much less expensive) and built a couple of sp cedar shelves. The Edgestar has a fan that runs continously, not sure about the Avanti, but otherwise they appear to be very similar. I found that with the unit pretty full of boxes, I did not need the Johnson controller. The highest setting keeps the temp right around 67. I know some others here have the Avanti and found the same thing. You may want to give it a try before spending money on the A419.
Bottom line....get the best deal.

What about the lighting?
Edgestar has LED (always on)
Avanti has switch with regular light

Is the LED enough light or would I need more?

The LED light is not on unless you switch it on. Looks like it would be pretty cool for wine, but I have boxes stacked in there so the light is useless and stays off. The advantage of LED lighting is no heat.

i run 2 Avanti EWC28 and i dont think u need the johnson controller, dartsinsa is right about keeping it filled it will hold humidity. I also have 2 1/2 lbs beads and 2 oust fans. I have been running this set up for like 3 years minus the 2 oust fans...

"Soft interior lighting with on/off switch"

So the Avanti is also an LED?

The Avanti on/off switch is inside the unit, in the back, upper right hand corner (near the temp control). With that location, the light is not all that convenient. From what I can tell it is not an LED, but just some low watt bulb. The amount of light from the bulb is trully uninspiring, and does not provide much use. Hope this helps.

Re: Avanti or Edgestar 28 thermoelectric wine cooler?

I probably don't need the light but the nerd in me liked the LED one.

And I'm probably a little worried a regular bulb would get left on and make heat...

Re: Avanti or Edgestar 28 thermoelectric wine cooler?

Thanks, They have 12 bottle for 99.00 (plus tax) at the local Target and I'm trying to decide if I really need the 28 that will cost me about $228.00 delivered. Beads are on order.

Obviously it won't hold as much but enough for now.... Did I hear slippery slope? But I'm also curious if the cooling element is the same size as the larger one and if it is going to affect the minimum/maximum temperatures?

I'd like to try it with wine bottles first and see if I might be lucky enough to get it to stay at say 68 degrees w/out a Johnson 419 probe.

I would go with a scratch and dent of the bigger model. I got mine for like $138.00 delivered and it works just fine. I am already just a few boxes from capacity.

Re: Avanti or Edgestar 28 thermoelectric wine cooler?

Picked up a Edgestar 18 bottle wine cooler off of E-bay tonight. Scratch/dent
for $69.00 + $39.00 for shipping. Wondering if anythingforsale is using the drop ship routine or if they are just an off-shoot of compactappliances, not that it really matters. Would have liked a larger 28 bottle unit but what the heck.

Been up to our armpits with heat in the great pacific northwest, plus living in a rambler with half a dozen skylights and no A/C doesn't help either.

They are stackable so don't worry about it. Just fill that one and then get another. Compactappliances and anythingforsale are the same. Congrats.
