custom cigar/wine monitoring solution...
I'm a hacker...
So for the next few weeks i'm hacking up a wireless temperature and humidity monitoring system for my humis. It's connected to the PC and will do alarms and all the good stuff. Is anyone interested in something like this? It's sort of pricey, a decent wireless sensor which has decoding capabilities that i can use on a PC is going to run about $200 each (it's commercial grade which pushes up the price). Is there any interest in something like this? If i hack this up for myself then i'm going to take shortcuts. If someone else wants to use my code then i'm going to be more careful with the design of the UI and the underlying data model. Each sensor is about 2x2x3 inches in size and are industrial strength. They reach about 300ft when in line of sight, shorter when going through humis. Anyway, just checking if someone else is geeky like me and wants to have total control of their collection from their PC. I'm thinking of linking it to an inventory system (its just another table and form in the UI, should be straight forward to add).

Do you think this would be something that would work in a cooler? Would be great to not have to keep opening them to monitor the Rh and temp..!!

Sorry Par, way over my head.
NAvyDoc, Radio Shack sells wireless temp./hygros for under $20. You put the sensor in your cooler and there is a stading display readout that you can put anywhere within about 50 ft. Heres the one I have and I love it, you will never have to open the cooler to check again. http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search

$200 is ALOT for a hygro and its purposes. Maybe if it made a meal once in awhile...

Re: custom cigar/wine monitoring solution...
I like gadgets enough to want one but can't justify that much investment. Maybe in the future there will be a less expensive probe available.
Keep us updated as to how it works out! |

Re: custom cigar/wine monitoring solution...
There is no functional difference between a PC connected sensor and a wireless radioshack sensor. The only difference is that the connection to a PC adds opportunities for additional functions which can only be done in a computer.
Examples of additional functions which could be implemented in a PC: Trends (humi temp and humidity as a chart i.e. showing if there are swings in humidity over time for instance, does the humi get low RH at night but stabilizes during the day?) E-mail or cell phone alarms (i.e. send a message to my cell phone if humidity goes below XX%) Humidity vs. temperature correlation (i.e. how much is my AC really affecting the sticks and the humidity) Inventory management (which sticks you have, box codes on those sticks, which humi has which sticks, how long they have been in the humi). Access alarms (when was the box opened) Reminders (i.e. put more water on the beads at scheduled intervals etc, Wine is getting old, cigar is ready for smoking). Ratings (this stick from this box rated XXX, this wine is excellent) etc. Anyway, i think i'm going to code this up. I have a large wine collection in a wine cellar and i need an inventory management program for it with embedded sensors. When i was architecting that program i realized that the problems i attempt to solve for my wine cellar are very similar to the requirements i would have if coding something for a humi. So i set out to make a unified solution and i could share the code if someone else is interested. Hence my posting... ![]()
