Coolerdor 101 Question - varnished boxes

I posted this in the following thread (http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthr...t=8924&page=2), however, I thought I might get a better response if I started a new thread.

I was wondering, is it bad to put varnished boxes in a coolerdor (or even a humidor for that matter)? I noticed a lot of people mentioning unvarnished boxes, is there a reason for this?

Also, how can you tell if a box is varnished, is it just shiny and stained?

thanks - mc#2

I would like to add a question to this thread please...If a box of cigars comes to you and it's cedar and everything but the top is "finished" and shiny is that ok in a coolerdor?

Well I'm no expert on the subject - but - all of my varnished and finished boxes have been stuck right on in my coolers. I haven't noticed any problems or ill effects.

Unvarnished boxes are better for aging, long term. But there is no prob at all putting them in the cooler. And yes, they are the ones that shine and unvarnised is unfinished.

Re: Coolerdor 101 Question - varnished boxes

The other day I had a sampler that came in a finished box. When I opened up my coolerdor I smelled something strange and borderline foul. I lifted up the box and it was the paint/finish. I took this one out. I would say if the finish doesn't have a strong smell it's nothing to worry about.
