Re: Getting Close To Finish: My Cabinet Humidor

Thanks for the notes guys. Spent last night getting the doors off and apart (glass, hinges out) - getting the openings sealed up, etc. Have to make a few brackets to hold it up off the deck for the finish. Will spend some time today on the cleaning of the shop. Need to get her as dust free as possible. Nothing worse than dust in your lacquer finish - This would be so much easier with a larger shop instead of what I have. Also will have to make up some kind of hanging brackets for the doors so I can spray both the back and fronts at the same time.

And then when I do get the finish done - I still have to install the drawers and face the backs of the doors with Spanish cedar.
Biggest task ahead though is getting the thing into my office. She weighs about a half a million pounds -

Ron

Half a million pounds huh....oh come on Ron, I bet it doesnt weigh more than 2 tons

You could always take it completely apart and move it in the office and put it back together

WOW...that look amazing. If I only had that kind of talent. Just curious, when the project is complete, would you be willing to post a sort of final tally (materials, hardware, costs, etc). Maybe a blueprint, so to speak, for the rest of us, in case we wanted to give it a shot. Again, looks amazing.

Simply spectacular Ron. Now if we can get the Cowboys jumpstarted you'd have it all going on.

Ditto. Also is sourcing some of the materials difficult? I've never seen Spanish Cedar for sale anywhere.

She looks better than most of the cabinets on sale on the net. You must be very excited.

Material costs would not be a problem. Blueprints however - well what you see drawn is is about it. Lucky for me I can visualize things and detail them in my mind. Then it's just getting what I build to look like what I see -

Getting the materials is not difficult either. Spanish cedar is not normally sold at larger stores such as Lowes or Home Depot. Lumber yards may carry it or can get it. For some reason a lot of people keep insisting on recommending places like Rocklers or Wood Crafters - it's very expensive at either of those places. Best place to acquire it is at a local hardwoods or exotic dealer. Of course you need to be able to prepare the wood as it's not sold finished.

There are actually a lot of craftsmen here on CS that have built fantastic cabinets - a few links have been posted in this thread. Anyone looking to build something should really study these others. I started this cabinet months before I knew about CS - otherwise I might have done a few things different.
