Coolerdor Setup Question

My humidor is just about full, and so it's time for me to setup a coolerdor. I don't plan on using it to store individual cigars, but rather full boxes of stogies for aging (if I could control myself). So my question is, if I'm storing everything in boxes, will I need to put additional Spanish cedar in my coolerdor?

Re: Coolerdor Setup Question

I would, it looks better and it will help it smell better instead of that plastic smell

Filling with cedar boxes alone will make it smell nice IMO.

The better coolers are food grade plastic, and once cleaned should have no odor whatsoever.
For the most part, any cedar that lines the coolodor is just an expensive air freshner!

Re: Coolerdor Setup Question

To get rid of the plastic smell, I put about a half a boxful of baking soda in a bowl, place it in the empty cooler, and close the lid for a few days.

Any specific coolers that you'd recommend?

Re: Coolerdor Setup Question

I would recommend getting a Coleman. They come in different sizes and they seem to have a tighter lid than others I've seen(very important).

Best of luck!

Re: Coolerdor Setup Question

I have a Coleman 100qt. I rinsed itdown with a solution of baking soda in water then left it to stand open overnight. i then left a little bowl of baking soda in it for a few hours, put in all my boxes of cigars [having taken out the Bowl of baking soda] and closed it. no added cedar and the thing smells amazing.

I think the cedar looks good - it's just not needed as far as I'm concerned. Cedar is used simply because it will absorb and release moisture - using beads makes this a moot point. And coolers to me are just simply for storage - I don't have people come over and say hey - look at my coolerdor.

But everyone is different so if it's good for you - no problem.

Re: Coolerdor Setup Question

I have used plastic storage containers for some years now. I have four "slide-unders" in my closet which hold multiple boxes. They work very well & are less expensive than actual coolers.

If you store boxes, the cedar is right there & there is no need for more.
