Re: Buying A Humidor - A Basic Buying Guide

Good post and very informative, but some contradictory points made by other BOTLs or from personal experience:
1) Spanish cedar: although many of the top quality ones have this, some of the topline ones do not. Davidoff humis for example, do not have Spanish Cedar. The rationale is that not having it will not impart addtl smells that weren't meant to be added to your precious sticks. In the case of Davidoffs, they are simply treated and have no smell. Davis are typically rated tops by CA. So definitely some caveats on this comment. I think to qualify the comment, if it does have an aromatic aroma, go w/Spanish Cedar vs. some unknown cedar or wood that might ruin your smokes, but there are exceptions to this rule.
2) Many seem happy w/Savoy humidors in the budget category and they do not have the mitered joints yet still perform adequately. I have one for now and will give a review. Having mitered joints will make the humidor more durable though.
3) One thing that was missing was the seal or quality of it??
4) It seems there would be cons of having a humidor too big to start off and that is you need to fill it all up for them to function properly. For example, if you have a 500 ct, you'd need to fill them up 250 cigars or so and for a newbie, how do you know what to fill them with?? You might end up with a bunch of crappie sticks. I'd recommend a staged approach. Get something more like 100 count, get recommendations from boards, Top 25, or local stores and then accumulate ones you like to save $s. Once you know what you like then add on a coolderdor.

Would be interested in hearing thoughts.

Re: Buying A Humidor - A Basic Buying Guide

Good additional points.
<O</O
The cedar is mostly there to protect the outside wood from the internal humidity. The more expensive humidors may use something different which is fine. Cedar is used mostly for the low cost. If the box was made of pine with no liner or cedar, your box would probably not last long. A secondary effect of the cedar is the aroma it adds to the box and eventually the cigars.

The seal is super important. A box that does not close with a whoosh or joints that come apart will cause many problems in maintaining humidity.
<O
Not a bad idea to start with a reasonably sized humi. However I have had one cigar in a 30 count humi and it does just fine using beads. Having all the void mostly filled would be an advantage because it limits the amount of air exchange and thereby minimizing the amount of work for your humidification device.<O

And that's my .
