My Dupont lighter won't take fuel..

Any ideas? My new Dupont Urban lighter doesn't seem to accept fuel. I have the right blue can too. I've had this lighter for some time, but just now decided to use it so maybe the warranty might not be valid. Aside from sending it in, is there anything anyone can think of that might be causing this problem?

Re: My Dupont lighter won't take fuel..

I didnt jump on that link posted above, but i can try to give you some advice from an S.T. Dupont user.

When i got my first Dupont, i didnt read any directions, or adhere to any tricks i'd heard. my lighter ran out of fuel, and i was so excited i finally got to refill it. i grabbed my dupongaz and i screwed it on to the bottom pretty well. the butane wasnt moving. i then started to examine things and thought that swirling the lighter upsidedown in a tornado motion would aid the process.

Nope. i dont know what the deal was that time, but i tell you what, thats the only time its happened.

Becuase this is my process for refilling all of my duponts, davidoffs, and dunhills, even non premium butane lighter can probably benefit from this.

1) take your lighter and bleed it from the filler valve. i use a tooth pick, people tell you "use a pen". i dont want ink on my Dupont.
anyway, press the valve once. wait a bit. do it again. again.....keep doing it until minimal air comes out. you can tell by the audible "TSSSSST".

2) take a soft paper towel, and wrap the lighter with it. now put it in the freezer for about 3-5 minutes, or the fridge for about 10-15. Use good judgement when placing it. dont put it on something where the lighter could fall. or next to some funky smelling stuff (if applicable).

3) whille waiting for the lighter grab the butane canister (dupongaz or whatever), and hold it snugly in your hand to warm it up. i know this seems ridiculous. just try it.

4) take your lighter out, and quickly grab your dupongaz (im gonna finish the process for a dupont). screw it into the valve until you think that it will need brute force turns to continue spinning.

5) notice that your butane just filled the lighter in about 5 seconds?? Good stuff eh? if you can see a bit more butane left in the dupongaz tip (clear part) let it sit for a few. or try the tornado motion, it could probably be effective here.

when taking off the dupongaz bottle, you get a slight "TSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST", dont worry you didnt lose much.

i hope this helps man. post back and tell us if you got it to work.

Screw it in? I don't understand. Mine is just a pressure fit. Anyway, I did bleed or tried to bleed the lighter. I did manage to get a little fuel in, but very little. I then unscrewed the valve/stem to look it over. The spring seems to work fine, but when I pressed the blue fuel container on the removed valve, nothing happened. Wouldn't fuel shoot thru the valve to prove it's working correctly? Maybe the valve is plugged or defective. Thanks for the replies. I'll get this thing working properly yet.

Sorry, Urban lighters are different. They dont screw on.

You're begining to worry me....you actually took out the valve?

Where did you buy the lighter from?

Re: My Dupont lighter won't take fuel..

Payless cigars in New Orleans. I couldn't help myself last fall when they had a two for one sale right after the hurricane struck. I have since sold three, and wouldn't you know it, number 4 doesn't work. I hadn't even tried any of them until today after I finally got some butane. It is 100% authentic.

Removing the threaded valve wasn't that big of a deal. A very simple part to my eyes. Appears no more complicated than a valve stem on a car tire. I had a look and tried the gas on the valve...didn't work. Screwed it back in the lighter and it's back to square one. Overall, it's a fine looking lighter and I'm sure I'll love it when it finally burns.

take a pen tip and press on the filler needle on the bottom of the lighter and let out all the air and then try to fill it up. i know that the tanks sometimes get fulled with air

Re: My Dupont lighter won't take fuel..

How likely is it that the filler needle will become pressed down too far?
