Question Your Humidity Choice - 65% or 70%?

I've used PG solution to manage my humidors, but have read much here about the strong preference many members have for for the Silica-based "Beads". They sound great, and I'll most likely switch based on what I've read. In my humid home and in sealed containers, top end control would be a welcome improvement.

Even more interesting is the choice of 65% or 70% humidity. I never thought of anything other than 70% as the magic number, but many of you seem to prefer 65%.

So, why is this? What's your preference and why? What do you like about your cigars at the lower or higher number? Why did you choose the target you did for your humidors?

Perhaps I'm missing something wonderful at 65%!

Re: Your Humidity Choice - 65% or 70%?

I use to stand by 70% humi, I now like 65% and I noticed they smoke better. The taste is fuller. Just my I still keep 1box at 70% but for the most part my ISOM's are at 65%. I think it's all about what u like. Just like some people like ISOM's and some like N/C. I rather have Annv padrons Nat over ISOM's, some think that's crazy. So it's all about what u like.

Re: Your Humidity Choice - 65% or 70%?

If you've ever had an over humidified sikar you'd notice that the filler takes in water at a very fast rate, faster than the wrapper, which causes the wrapper to split. ISOMs seem to have a tighter draw than NCs so many enthusiasts like to keep their ISOMs at a lower rh to draw down the size of the filler to aid in the air-flow of the sikar.

Along with air flow a lower rh seems to allow sikars to burn better and yes bring out a fuller flavor.

I use the beads because they seem to be one of the more reliable means to regulate rh in my humidor. The price is reasonable and the beads reusable.

I would like to get an active humidifier someday, but by then I suppose that I'll have a cabinet humidor.

Re: Your Humidity Choice - 65% or 70%?

I use 70% beads but by chance or mis-pick they are holding at 65 in 2 different humidors... and I like the result better than when I was registering 70 with my first humi and gifted beads

I have the Set And Forget from Bob Staebell.

It has been at 65/65 and never moves. It is dead on all the time.

Re: Your Humidity Choice - 65% or 70%?

I actually use 70% beads in my NC coolidor, but 65% almost exclusively for all CCs. Depending on the vitola, I will put in a desktop at 60-63% for a week or two before I consider ready to smoke.

Set and Forget? I haven't heard of that. Is it an adjustable active system?

Thanks,

Re: Your Humidity Choice - 65% or 70%?

Heartfelt beads...65% for me.

I've used 70% beads as well as PG and often had problems with the burn. I've wondered why most sources state 70% as a magic number. It may have something to do with the propylene glycol solution that many people use.
Not sure though. My

Re: Your Humidity Choice - 65% or 70%?

Mix of 65% beads in the high-end 'gar humi and coolerdor, and an evaporative system in the everyday humi and yard 'gar coolerdor. Will soon be 100% beads if I stock up as much as I think I will!
