Bead/Coolerdor probs?

Hey all,

My Coolerdor/bead setup has been fluctuating and running high and I don't know why. I have a 54 qt. cooler with approx 300 sticks in it. I have two heartfelt 65% 4oz perforated tubes in there. I took one out, and it's still running at about 75% (I just checked 5 mins ago and it's at 70% now). Any ideas why it would be fluctuating so much?

And yes I emailed Viper too.

Thanks
Rich

Re: Bead/Coolerdor probs?

Could be. I just salt tested the one hygro last night and it runs 5% high. Last night it was reading at 80% (or 75% actual). I'm salt testing the other one as we speak. If I got cedar trays and put the cigars in trays instead of in their boxes, would that create a more stable environment?

Re: Bead/Coolerdor probs?

Beads basically are a "set and forget" scenario. All you have to do is follow the instructions and give them some water from time to time. Do you trust the accuracy of your hygrometer? If you just put the beads in, I would give them several days to get things settled. Also, adding more beads than necessary should not make a difference in the RH. Just my

Curious, how much of that cooler is "extra space"? Because in an enclosed area like a cooler with not much air in or out, and wet sticks with lotsa trapped air, I could see you getting high readings for a while. The beads tend to take more time to remove excess humidity than they do releasing it. If you had some boxes that were sitting outside the dor, you may add those to absorb humidity, assuming they are cedar boxes.

Re: Bead/Coolerdor probs?

Well,
Let's see. It's a 54 qt cooler. I have...

1 box Torano Sigs
1 Box Torano Virtuoso (both Torano boxes are Torps)
1 Box Gran Habano Gran Robusto
1 Box Diesel Toro
1 Box JdN Antano robusto grande
1 Box La Aroma de Cuba Monarchs
2 Bundles Connie 843
1 Bundle RP fact selects
1 Bundle La Floridita toro
1 Bundle Super Premiums from CI
1 Bundle Nic 3000 Torps
20 5 Vegas A robustos
10 Tatuaje's
5 Litto Gomez
3 Mombachos
5 Don Pepin Blue label toros

Guess I didn't have as many as I first thought. BUT there's still not that much "free space". Do you think an Oust fan might help?

blows that theory outta the water! Oust fan might help, I have one. Circulation is a good thing. One last theory, is your hygro on the the bottom level? Cuz humidity tends to settle, so if it is, try moving it to another level and check the reading. if it is very different you need something to move the air around a little(read oust fan).

Re: Bead/Coolerdor probs?

Yeah,
All the boxed cigars are in their boxes, so there really isn't much room left. The hygros are both on top. I might put the Oust fan back in. Maybe opening the bottom drain plug for a while?

Re: Bead/Coolerdor probs?

I think you may just need more beads. 8 oz of beads is probably not enough to regulate 54qts. worth of space.

But wouldn't you think the problem would be the opposite then (not enough humidity)?

Nope. One tube looks to be about 50% and the other is around 30%

WOuld depend on ambiant RH.
COuld b..
Sticks are wet and beads are trying to remove it and the beads are already filled with H2O. OR tHe seal is so-so and amb RH is high and beads can't keep up. They could just settle down after a while too.
