Drymistat Tubes and Viper Beads?

Whats do you guys think of filling old drymistat tubes with beads? i know some guys do actually do this, but how effective is it? Did the tubes need to be modified? I dont EVER need the beads to suck up moisture, only GIVE (as much as i can get).

I swear i'm at my wits end with my situation. i think my condo must be dry as hell, because 4 three month old drymistat tube are giving me 63/64 rh. its a RyJ humidor thats rated at about 250ct, and i have about 120 sticks in it. i have a half pound of beads that i tried to put inside, but they didnt do much. and theyre 70rh to boot.

Problem is i had the beads in pantyhose. takes up too much space. so i wanted to see how you guys do it with the drymistat tubes.

I'm going to assume that you've done the proper calculation for the amount of beads required and that 1/2 lb is adequate.
Is your hygrometer analog or digital? (go digital). Have you salt tested your hygrometer for accuracy? (it could be off). Have you done the light test checking your humidor for a proper seal? (humidity could be escaping)

Yes, i use digital gauges. all 6 were recently tested with the boveda calibration kit.

the humidor is a-ok. no leaks. the humidor that this one replaced that sat in the exact same spot, gave me the same headache.

I would just like to know from anyone that uses the beads with old drymistat tubes, if you get the humidity you should be with this combo. and, have the tubes been modified.

Re: Drymistat Tubes and Viper Beads?

I am using the drymistat tubes. The companies that sell the beads sell empty tubes which in their pictures, appear to have holes through the walls, the drymistat tubes only have microscopic pores to emit the humidity. I am not sure if the "old tubes" would be the best for the beads, panty hose would allow more humidity to escape than the tubes.

Your humidor might be in the draft of by a heating/cooling source. Don't know how big your humi is, but an Oust fan might help if it would fit in there. Otherwise, I think you might be better off if you used a holder where you could see if the beads are working, ie, some of the beads are not completely white, but clear. It might give you peace of mind.

Hehehe too funny as I did this. The tubes are much more effective if you perforate them though. I made my own perforator by nailing some small ring shank nails through a piece of tough ply material. Then I pushed the tubes down on them and rotated. dozens and dozens of tiny holes. It worked.... They are still not efficient though as the tubes you can buy from Viper which I ended up ultimately getting. For the price all that trouble wasn't worth it. In a pinch though if you are looking for something to hold you over it will work.

I love it when I can say been there, done that.

You need to do nothing at all to the Drymist tubes to use them with Vipers beads. I have been using them for a time now and they work perfect. See the link in my signature below for pictures.

Is that entirely true as it has been brought up many times over the key to bead efficiency is surface area. Just a thought... Would they work? I'm sure they would. I'd wonder about the effectiveness though.
