Soft flame?
Okay, in keeping with my search for the perfect accesories, I've come across a new question. I've been looking for the right lighter, now, what is the differance between soft flame and the torch? I guess I know what the differance is, better question. What is better for me? Side note I've been working on not burning the S@(%T out of cigars when I light them with my cheapo torch? If I use my zippo, I never get that burn taste.

Re: Soft flame?
zippos to me leave a harsh flavour and taste.
There is a zippo insert you can buy from heartfelt so it turns it into a torch, i've ordered one with my new order of beads, ![]() andy

Re: Soft flame?
You can get soft flame lighters fueled by butane- that sounds like the way to go for you if you enjoy using your Zippo. You will eliminate the odor of the zippo fuel but still retain the soft flame and eliminate over scorching your cigar.
Here's one I believe: http://www.cigarmony.com/store/produ...products_id=83

Re: Soft flame?
Ya, torches are cool but I think I might go with the soft flame. Now I need to find one in my price range. The search continues.

Re: Soft flame?
I found a disposable Bic cigar lighter for cigars. Fueled with butane and has a nice long soft flame.
Got mine at Fred Meyer/Kroger for $1.50. |

Re: Soft flame?
I like them both, depending on the situation. My favorite soft flame is the Corona Old Boy. It's a pipe lighter, but is extremely reliable, has a large tank, and looks good, too. I'm not sure one is better than the other, but I do prefer the soft flame when I'm going out at night--it avoids the inevitable "crack lighter" jokes I hear when I use the PB-207

Re: Soft flame?
I prefer a soft flame, but it is rather inconvenient outdoors. I have a Nibo VIP that looks pretty good and works great. Otherwise I have a 4 year old firebird that works like a champ and a blazer insert for my Zippo.
The key to lighting with a torch is to take your time and use the superheated air above the flame, not the flame itself, to light the cigar. A little practice and you'll get the hang of it.

Re: Soft flame?
It's not specifically for cigars, actually it's for pipes, but I picked one of these up from Mark at Cigarmony a month or so ago and really like it. It's been refilled a dozen times or more and usually lights on the first try.

Re: Soft flame?
I was in my local B&M, which offers a huge range of torch lighters from expensive classical to cheap novelty, and I asked if they had a soft flame traditional lighter. The assistant dug out a carboard display tray from a back shelf, and offered me three for $5! Oh, how I wish I had bought all six that were available. Unbranded, but work like a charm—flint ignition, not much to go wrong when I disassembled one to check, and serviceable even if not field serviceable. They can even be comfortably inverted without sputtering when lighting a pipe. I often temprarily misplace my lighter around the house and car, but I have yet to misplace all three at once.
Lew Rothman is sending me a free (he hit me with shipping, so it's not free, but it is cheap) Colibri 'Figurado' along with a box of Sancho Panza Double Maduro, so it will be interesting to see if my prejudices against torches and Colibri in particular (forty years of bitter experience rather than prejudice in the latter case) are justified, or if I have just been tilting at windmills [grin] My admittedly rambling point is that experience, recommendation, research, and most of all handling before purchase, are better ways to proceed towards a choice than random selection—but sometimes happenstance smiles on us indulgently when it thinks we have suffered enough. |

Re: Soft flame?
I know alot of people hate Colibri but I have always had good luck with them. I recently purchased a Colibri Morpheus that is both a torch and a soft-flame.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Colibri-Morpheus...QQcmdZViewItem eBay has all the styles.

Re: Soft flame?
I have switched back and forth over the years, and finally decided I needed both to yield the perfect light. I use the Walmart Ronson Torch (Butane)...AND the Thunderbird Soft-Flame (Butane); developed for Zippo Fans. This combo can be had for about $20 dollars.
I toast the foot with the Torch, then put the cigar in my mouth for the final light with the Soft-flame. Touch-Ups, with the Torch...Re-Lights with the Soft-Flame. Works flawlessly, and have had both lighters well over a year. Only caveat, is use top grade fuel...Vector or Lava. -Ronson Torch = WalMart -Thunderbird Soft-Flame= Lighters Galore

Quote:
![]() I digress.. ![]() I have two soft flame lighters that I would recommend. 1) Nibo VIP1 - should run you around $20; a decent Ligne knockoff ![]() 2) Vector Emporer - around $55; has 3 openings for a WIDE soft flame. ![]() As others mentioned, the bad thing about tradiitional soft flames is that they don't work well outside in the wind. In general I only use the soft flame style lighter indoors. I would recommend you get a Z-Plus insert for your Zippo for outdoors/windy conditions. If you are getting your cigars too hot with a torch lighter, hold it further away; the flame does not need to touch the cigar with torch lighters. Toast the foot whith the tip of the flame at least an inch away from the cigar, I think that will help with your problem. -Matt- |
