End table humidor

I would really like an end table style humidor, been looking at whats out there, the materials used, construction, finishes and prices, and it's been quite a while since I've put plane iron to grain.

So I started looking at kiln dried (14% moisture) curly cherry lumber.

Is it necessary to line a humidor intended for storing sealed boxes of cigars with Spanish cedar?

I understand it does better with humidity then other wood, is there any other reason to use it for what I have in mind.

Re: End table humidor

If you're looking for a large, free-standing, end table type humidor look no further then Vigilant Inc. The company, located in New Hampshire, offers, without a doubt, the best "free-standing" low matenience, end-table type BIG HUMIDORS.
I have owned their Climatech 1001 for a little less then one year and I could not be more happy. They are pricey to say the least, but if it's quality construction, beauty, and the safety and well being off your cigars that your concerned about, you really needn't look any further. The Climatech line comes with the option of humidity control only, or both temperature AND humidity control. As i said, they are pricey, but the customer service is really unbelievable (they are patient, kind, and ready to answer any question you have- however complexed, or simple). Plus i guarantee- if you look high and low you will never find a humidor close to being as well made. The detail in the construction, as well as type of woods used, etc.. is MIND-BLOWING!!!
A Vigilant, in my opinion, is a piece of art. My climatech 1001 has a draw which holds 240 loose and (although they say 25 boxes) comes with enough free space to hold at least 14 boxes- more or less- depending on the size!... However, my point is, 25 boxes, absolutely not. Unless your talking about 25 boxes of Hemmingway Best Sellers (well maybe 35 boxes of best sellers)!.
In the end, other then a few "mom & pop" type stores that offer large end-table type humidors (which i guarantee won't work nearly as well), this is , without, a doubt, your best- and basically, only choice. Plus it has a no quibble full refund for the first 30 days if you are unhappy for ANY reason, and a year warranty beyond that. Other then that, this humidor could not be any more less hassle, Just pull the reservoir door open, and poor in your distilled water. There is one set of filters which are placed inside the reservoir draw, but they only need replacing, twice a year, and you can buy them, plus anything else you might need for your humidor through vigilant, directly.
If i sound like some kind of infomercial it's only because these humidors- as i've said, really work (at least in my case) just as well as the company claims!
At least check it out their website, it is Vigilantic.com.

GOOD LUCK,
SMOKESTACK

Well as you know that's the main reason - it has the ability to absorb and release moisture without damaging itself. But no - you don't have to use spanish cedar. I would line it with something though to help prevent damage to the joints of your outer wood. Use metal, formica, etc anything along those lines will work - just as long as the joints are sealed. Make sure that it off-gases before storing anything in it.

Re: End table humidor

Isn't cedar also more impervious to mold & other contanimants than regular wood?

Are you sure you want to kill those trees?

Search around and you should be able to find various info about the cedar, but I would say the short answer is there's no reason it HAS to be lined with cedar. Older humidors used mahogany, people use coolidors all the time, some humis used to be made with glass...

Vigilant looks like the way to go, but the price does seem a little prohibitive. Thanks for the information, and one day I may be able to work this one into the budget.

I can give you a deal on this one:

Mahogany is an alternative wood often used to spanish cedar if you plan on building one.

Hope this helps

Re: End table humidor

This,

Is the last piece of furniture I built.

Used no power tools at all, planes, hand saws, barce and bit.

Seems that Spanish cedar also protects the wood, so that may be the way to go.

Re: End table humidor

Thanks Mark,

The curly cherry I'm looking at has close to the same figure, it'd likely cost $3K or more to have someone make what I want with a Spanish cedar lining.

Right around $500.00 for the lumber and hardware, plus my labor to build it myself.

Re: End table humidor

I'm thinking 8/4 (eight/quarter) lumber, 2/3's as wide as needed for sides, back, drawer and door will allow for bookend matching of panels and the legs.

Would like to get a board a wide enough to make the table top without a seam.
