Zino Humidor Humidification Unit?

Does anyone know a source for the humidification units for Zino humidors? I called Davidoff, and they charge $130 with the trade-in of your old unit, which seems quite steep to me. I could buy some other brand and attach it with magnetic tape, but I would prefer to stay with the original.
Thanks.

Sound like a great time to switch to The Puck Humidifer or the RH Beads

Hey Mike - Read the stickies at the top of the forum to learn all about the beads and The Puck. Once you start using them you will wonder why you ever messed with anything else!
They make life with cigars easy.

And when you get done - you may want to go to the New Gorilla forum and introduce yourself - it's a great place to get started here on CS!

As has been said above you should look into switching to Heartfelt Beads, I offer a wide variety of containers to suite your need.

Re: Zino Humidor Humidification Unit?

Thanks to all for their suggestions. I found another thread on here where someone took apart a humidification unit and replaced the Oasis foam with beads. I also read a thread on here where someone was using cat litter which was made from silicate. I bought a 6 pound bag of Ultra Pearls for $7, and replaced the Oasis in my Elie Bleu humidifier, and it has been 70% for a week now.

There is no crystalline silicate in Ultra Pearls, and no deodorizing agent. The blue crystals in it are the same as the round beads. The manufacturer told me that they just colored some of the crystals (food grade dye) and made them a different shape to make it look "pretty".

I ruined the Zino unit by using PPG (many thanks to the fool who first thought that one up), but thought that I would take a chance on the cat litter. If I get brave enough, I am going to tackle the Zino unit. Since it is a solid back, I will have to cut it out, but again, there is another thread on here showing step by step how a guy did it.

Again, thanks for the suggestions.

Cool - I'll have to look into that thread -

Yeah - this comes up every so often - using cat litter as a humidifying agent. Personally I'll stick with a product that regulates the humidity at known RH levels verses a product designed to absorb cat piss.
Viper Beads and/or The Puck use a product accepted for use by the Smithsonian to help preserve historical artifacts - I find more comfort in that over what Frisky uses to relieve herself in.

But you know - what ever works -

Ron I have my oasis apart, the amount of beads you can place in there is quite minimal for anything larger then a desktop.... Plus the fan only kicks on to add humidity so the removal factor seems to be quite limited. I will let you know more as I am seeing if a humi recovers faster with the fan based bead system..

Interesting on the Ultra Pearls. Keep us posted on how that works. I thought of using kitty litter is a scary one though...

Re: Zino Humidor Humidification Unit?

Personally, i wouldn't risk it, i mean, it could ruin a perfectly good set of good smokes. For not much, you can take the risk factor out of it by buying good quality RH beads from Heartfelt or cigarmony. I think the extra couple of bucks is worth the knowledge that you've got good quality beads looking after your cigars!

just my 2 pence though

Having had this discussion before - my only observation note would be that on the Oasis XL models - the bottom is designed to be replaced after "x" amount of use to prevent mold build-up. Installing the beads and adding water as one normally would will prevent the replacement issue as the beads will not mold.

But yep, putting beads in the Oasis XL models is not going to let them (the beads) work as intended. It would though ensure that the Oasis does not over humidify as it would only release the amount of moisture that the beads are set at.

Now as for the Oasis II which I also have but have not used yet - it is going into the new cabinet - I will be removing the foam and filling that sucker up with beads. It has larger circulation fans in it. My thought/theory process is this: install the beads and then set the Oasis to a setting below what the beads are set for. This way air continues to circulate across the beads allowing them to do their job. May work or not - we will see. And hey - it might work for the XL models also.
