Humidity Control

The RH seems to vary from drawer to drawer in this cabinet, from 65% to 70%.

It's steady at each level, just not the same.

Not enough to be worrisome, enough I wonder where the best placement of 70% RH beads would be. Or if several small containers of beads might be better then the single 2oz container in the bottom drawer.

My cabinet was running several % higher on the bottom (dense, moist air falls) until I added some beads. No problems since.

Re: Humidity Control

I'm completely anal about this.. Every single tray that I use in my humidor has it's own bead tube. I also keep two bags on each side of the bottom of my humidor to regulate down there.

Is all of that necessary? ..probably not, but it helps me sleep at night.

Re: Humidity Control

In my cabinet I am using an oust (without the chemical insert) battery opererated fan to help reduce the variation, keep some circulation. 5 min on, 15 min off is its programmed running time

And get the beads spread out thin also....not a big pile, but a flat sheet of them works well.

Re: Humidity Control

I just picked up the same humi, and an oust fan will fit if you take it completely out of the casing. I'm going to try it and see how it works (seasoning now)

Re: Humidity Control

I've never worried about fluctuation in RH, so long as the hygrometer's calibrated. But not getting consistent or accurate readings in this case with a calibrated hygrometer really bugged me.

This might be overkill... But with 4+ boxes of cigars in this humidor, there's no point playing around.

Half pound 65% RH beads, one 9 x 7 - 65% RH sheet, 5 - 1oz bead tubes and an Oust fan.

With the sheet on the bottom, a full tube of beads in each drawer and the smart fan in the bottom drawer, the hygrometer reads steady at 65%.

With my daily & pass/trade smokes in other humidors, this one won't get much traffic and the RH should stay constant.

Even after hydrating the RH beads and sheet and putting them in the cabinet yesterday morning, the hygrometer was reading off this afternoon.

Got an Oust fan and took it apart. Half an hour after putting it in the humidor, the hygrometer was dead on at 65%.

p.s. Scimmia, Thanks for the tip on the fan. Your right, removed from the housing the fan just fits in one of the drawers.

Total cost; $104.34

Re: Humidity Control

Humidors with drawers like the one you have are a great candidate for the Humidity Sheets. Cut it to size and lay it in the bottom of each drawer. This will help balance the humidor out.

Those little Oust fans are a great item as well, they move the air around just enough to help the balance.

No problem, another tip, Radio Shack has D Battery holders for $0.99, so with a little soldering, you can make it a lot more stable, the battery doesn't like to stay in place without the case, it seems.

I'm pretty sure it will still fit in the drawer, I've modified mine a little bit (cut .25" off the bottom of each drawer so I can stack 52 RG cigars 2 deep)
