Beads aren't working properly

Not sure if this is were I should post this but I thought everybody would enjoy a good laugh. And maybe serve as a don't do for others.

Yes they are, it really probably helps if I take the stock humidifier out. I guess that is what happens after a long day at work. And being all giddy to have my beads so I cold get the humidity down from 72-73%.

Well here is the story. On Monday I recieved my 65% beads and it was late so I just threw them on a small plater to get them in the humidor before I took my shower and forgot about it. Then after checking my humidor the last two nights it was still reading 70%. Needless to say I was starting to get frusterated. So I thought to myself I will convert my stock humidifier to beads and wait and check them tomorow maybe it was just going to take some time. Well I went to get it and I could not find it. Then low and behold I noticed I had forgotten to remove it from my humidor :s (that was last night). So we shall see how it looks when I get home. And yes I have salt tested my hydrometer's (digital and analog).

Did you charge the beads with distilled water?

Re: Beads aren't working properly

I've also read to make sure you don't charge all of the beads. If you have a problem with too much humidity in your humi then I would only charge about half and let the other half absorb some of that excess humidity first. Those beads will both give and take away Rh. It sounds like you need some humidity taken away. Good luck.

Re: Beads aren't working properly

If it has been a couple of days with just the beads in the humi and you are still @ 70% then you probably need to dry the beads out some, re introduce them and let things settle. They can only absorb so much moisture after all.

Re: Beads aren't working properly

Hi Dominic,

If your RH level was 73% and you are trying to lower it to 65%, make sure you use the RH beads completely dry so they can fully absorb the excess moisture. Once the RH beads turn clear and if your RH is still high you will need to dry the RH beads so they can continue to absorb the excess RH.

To dry them, simply spread them on a sheet and dry them with a hair drier set on low. Dry beads will be milky white in color and hydrated RH beads will be clear.

Once your target RH is reached, only hydrate the RH beads until about 60% of them are clear so they can continue to both absorb and release water vapor to maintain the target RH.

Hope this helps

If you use this method, make sure you are on low.

I have a stainless steel broiler pan that has never been used for cooking. I place the beads in a single layer, put 1 layer of cheesecloth over them and weight down the edges of the cloth with magnets and the beads stay put when hit with hot air. BTW, I just use the drip pan, not the slotted broiler rack. Paul

You can also just place this pan in a 180 degree oven and let the beads dry that way, this method won't take too long and the chances of blowing the beads across the kitchen are much less.
