Hard to choose...

I currently have a small ~40 ct humidor that I managed to stuff about 50 cigars into. I also have a ziplock back of another 20 off to the side. I think it's time to upgrade to a ~$150 piece that can hold 100-150 cigars. I am a college student and I need something that can work for my dorm room size-wise. It needs to be sturdy and somewhat scratch-resistant b/c 1) there are sometimes crazy goings-on in my room 2) it will have to survive transportation back home to NYC when the school year ends.

In my research, I have really fallen in love with The Tradition. A few questions:

1) It seems that Tampa Humidors has a good reputation... can anyone comment on how fast the shipping is and whether they ever actually accept "submit an offer"?
2) Anyone have anything to say about this particular humidor or can recommend something similar?
3) Should I buy this humidor at one of the other websites (Cigarmony, Cigar Humidors) that carry it instead?

I am currently situated in Philadelphia and could pick up a Savoy at Holt's. I think the Tigerwood large size is pretty cool looking. What should I do?

Re: Hard to choose...

While that is a very nice humidor, have you given any thought to instead setting up a small coolerdor? While it won't look as nice, it is much cheaper allowing you to put more money towards cigars .

Re: Hard to choose...

I would agree to check out Cigarmony. Mark has the same humidor with nearly the same price. Another benefit, he is in VA while Tampa Humidor is in Tampa. Shipping will be cheaper from Mark. Mark also is a smaller operation and is on top of every order. Have never heard of a complaint that was not resolved in a proper manner. By the way, I have bought from Tampa Humidor and they are a great company. Please don't take this to knock them. Hope this helps. Paul

I stole my parents cooler, but you can pick one up for $20-30. You can get A lb of beads for $25ish. You can even get cedar trays for $15 or so a piece. You can fit a lot more than 100-150. They are durable, and MUCH easier to regulate heat in the warmer months when dorms can get warm. All you need to do is get some blue ice containers and rotate them every 6-8 hours. If you don't get trays all you gotta do is get some cedar cigar boxes.

Although I know it's nice and pretty like a brand new humidor - I also give a thumbs up for a coolerdor. I've got three of them myself - along with three other humidors and a cabinet being built.
They are cheap - fast - and hold perfect RH for you.

Then when you graduate and have more space - look into buying the biggest one that you can afford.

Re: Hard to choose...

Haha, I get the merits of the coolerdor but, right now, I'm not really buying box quants. Last month I bought a box of 25 Padron 2000s... that was my first and only box purchase. Otherwise, I prefer to buy a few singles or a sampler every time I visit my local B&M (Holt's) b/c I seem to have developed an expensive taste (PAM, etc.) I think a nice desktop humidor would serve me best, therefore, in terms of displaying my nice singles. Haha... and if I had a big cooler, I would probably have a burning desire to fill it... don't really need this hobby to get there right now. I'm leaning towards ordering from Mark... I ordered a Palio from him last week and the service was really top notch. I would also get a free cigar caddy with my order... can't beat that.

Anyone have comments about the Savoy's? What I don't like about that kind of humidor is... 1 drunken crash and the finish/veneer is ruined. But it is purty.

Edit: Mark, if you spot this, please chime in. Otherwise, you'll probably get a PM or e-mail from me soon.

I had to get a Humi because my Wife (AKA the Boss) would not allow a coolerdor in the house.

I feel for you bro. Mine is sitting in the living room, albeit in a corner with my GF's school books piled on top. I figure it helps hold the seal. Don't really find the need to look at the cooler like I do the desktops. Now as for the contents, I like to open it up and talk to them a couple times a day.

Re: Hard to choose...

Tampa Humidors sells on eBay under the name mydiscountauctions.
I've seen that humidor auctioned for less.

I haven't had any dealings with them, but they have a 99.5% positive feedback score.

If you really want to get the dope (negative feedback) on any ebay seller take a look at this site ~ http://www.toolhaus.org/cgi-bin/negs ~

Re: Hard to choose...

I haven't used this vendor but I do have a desktop for my everyday smokes.

I chose one with a glass top, the reasons being:
1. I could monitor the humidity gauge (small digital) without opening the lid.
2. So I could see inside (without opening the lid).

From your post ;however, this may not be a reasonable consideration.
Just something else to think about.

Good luck with your decision.

Re: Hard to choose...

I have a savoy and yeah I dropped a rubiks cube on it and the veneer chiped ( ) but oh well it just looks seasoned now.

but other than that they are a great humidor very very good seal and I have no regrets. I know how you feel with wanting to buy a nice looking humidor over a plastic cooler, but after a few months on this forum, the cooler starts to make more and more sense.

if you go with one of the others, there are some nice ones out there so savoy isnt the only cheap pretty choice.

as to where, you can never go wrong with cigarmony, Mark will treat you well!

good luck

Re: Hard to choose...

I would definatley go larger.

You will not be sorry in a few months. Either coolador or a bigger humidor.

Just go as large as you can afford.
