Heartfelt beads vs Cigar Oasis

I've been using a Cigar Oasis in each of my 3 Diamond Crown Biltmore humidors and they have maintained the RH at + - 2%. The Diamond Crown humidifier as well as passive foam humidifiers held RH at + - 8% on their best days and on bad ones as much as + - 12%. I went to the CO 18 months ago to solve this very serious problem and for the most part it did _ hey a range of 2% RH is a BOTL dream. But here in NJ [sorry] the change in seasons and inside climate control changes played havoc with the RH in my humidors. When the RH in them dropped that was no problem the CO easily handled it by dumping moisture into them _as designed but when the RH rose the CO was useless because it don't lower RH . I was hell bent on getting the CO and never thought about this short coming so for a couple of weeks a year. I had to play prop-the-top continually with 3 humidors and it's a royal pain in the ash. _ enter viper139's beads Viper139’s [Heartfelt] beads made the storing part of our hobby an interesting and satisfying part and not the part you dread. RH goes down they release or put moisture in your humidor, RH goes up they absorb or take moisture out of your humidor, I've replced the CO's 2 weeks ago but because I changed my RH from 70% with the CO's to 65% beads it took a little longer to stabilize, now they're at a happy 66%. OK now I got 3 CO's for sale _cheap_ and now I'm finally using the easiest, most accurate, consistent and IMHO the best available method of humidification there is [having used every type] _ hands down. Score viper139 beads 3 Cigar Oasis 0

Unless you really need the money, you may think about using both setups depending on the real estate situation. The beads will definitely raise the humidity up to desired, but they take longer than a CO. You could use the CO to make sure swings are kept to a minimal amount of time, and the beads to bring down excess humidity.

Glad to hear the beads work well. I just order a pound of 65% yesterday. I'm tired of messing with the foam filled humidifiers.

Re: Heartfelt beads vs Cigar Oasis

This is the thread I was looking for!

I bought my Savoy Bubinga XL humi a few weeks ago. I have Cigar Oasis XL for humidification.

OK...long story short, I just bought two Humigauge digitial temp./hygrometers, one for each shelf. I have yet to salt test them.

With my CO set to 74, the RH in the lower shelf is 70, upper shelf is 58.

I am considering reworking the foam filter that came with the humi (and has never been used) into a Heartfelt humi system and attaching it to the top of my humi. I'll use the beads in conjunction with my CO.

How much in the way of beads should I use?

Any other suggestions?

Here are a few pics of my humi:

From heartfelt's site, click on "bead set up"

Here are some quantities for various containers.
5 cubic feet requires 1 pound of humidification beads.
1/3 pound of beads per 50 quarts (coolerdors)

Calculating the cubic area of your humi:
Measure the depth, width and height of you humi (example is 24” depth, 36” wide and 48” height)
Multiply the three; 24x36x48=41472 cubic inches
Divide 41472 by 1728 (number of cubic inches in a cubic foot) 41472/1728= 24 cubic feet
Divide the cubic feet by 5 (number of cubic feet per pound) 24/5 = 4.8
You would need 4.8 pounds of humidification beads for this humi.

Kick As* smokes you got there!

Re: Heartfelt beads vs Cigar Oasis

i have used a CO for many years now in way way or another. always been very happy. right now it's in a cooler. luckily my other cabinets are from vigilent and are both humidity and temp controlled. damn they make good stuff.
i also have a couple friends that have used CO's and worked well for them.

Thanks!

My problem is that I only want beads for the top shelf because I plan to keep the Cigar Oasis XL on the bottom shelf.

So the math is 12" in depth, 16" wide, 3" height.

Applying the Heartfelt formula:

576 cu inches / 1728 = 1/3 cubic ft.

0.3333 / 5 = 0.0666666 or approximately an ounce of beads.

Has anyone else utilized this type of setup? Is this feasible?

Thanks,

Rob

Re: Heartfelt beads vs Cigar Oasis

Are you saying your CO is not holding the RH consistent through out the cabinet? You can try this as a quick fix that will probably resolve your issue. Get an oust fan and place it in the cabinet to produce an air cycle. This will make the CO even things out. Also make sure you top off your CO with some distilled water. It should even out fast IE 24 hours to even at all levels.

Also set your CO at 70 I have three of them and they are all within 1%RH Accurate. I think your hygros are causing you to over humidify!

If you feel so inclined you can also take your CO apart and lengthen the sensor wire 3-4 feet and place it where ever you want.

CO is full. I just up'ed my RH to 74 last night to see what the hygros would register this morning. 58% on the top shelf is concerning me. My humi is pretty full, but I thought this was a good thing for RH.

I did a quick search for OUST fan info. It looks fairly big for my humi (150 or so sticks)

I noted the one ounce perforated tube on Heartfelt's site.

Which would you try first? OUST fan or one ounce Heartfelt tube?

Thanks for your response!

Ron,

I would try some sort of fan, the CO is one awsome peice of equipment. The reason that I think your Hygros are way off is becasue if you humidity was really that low the CO would be flashing H20. So it thinks the humidity of just fine. I think the hygros are really that far off, as the CO would not allow you to drop that low without giving a warning.
